Once when I was 12 I went to get a haircut from my mom's friend Woody. Woody was an elderly gay man who was the bee's fucking knees. He was one of the first adults other than my parents that I remember thinking, "This guy's pretty fucking cool." In retrospect, the fact that he had a roommate in old age, lived up four flights of stairs, and cut hair out of an apartment does NOTHING to tarnish this image. His roommate Jack was also cool and kept a stack of Hustlers under the television that my brothers and I fell on with wild abandon until my mom caught us looking at the glossy full-colour images of vaginas and made us put them back. To console us Jack took us over to his formidable late-'70s hi-fi system and vinyl collection. "Check this out, man," he said, and held up a vinyl copy of The Grand Illusion. He took the record out of the sleeve with an ear-to-ear smile. The sun shone through it onto my face. "Translucent yellow vinyl, dudes." He put on Side B and moved his hands throughout the synth intro to "Ms. America" as though he was conducting it. I was completely torn apart by this. I didn't even know how to react. I cut my hair, I looked at porn, I listened to Styx on yellow translucent vinyl. I like to think it was the day I became a man.

I would rather listen to KISS than Styx, and that's saying a whole, whole lot. I also quite enjoy a multitude of total buttrock 70s bands, but I just can't deal with those guys. Renegade and Fooling Yourself in particular make me want to carve out my ears with grapefruit spoons.

I am, however, truly fascinated by Candy's apparently deep, deep devotion to Styx. 0_o

I came for the Styx appreciation and stayed for the lulz.

Also, Kiss suck ass. I can't even think of something I wouldn't pick listening to over Kiss.

I believe aerosmith to be far worse than kiss, and in fact to be the worst band in the entire world.
