Stupid Historical Fantasy books/tv fanfic?

Game of Thrones?
Show so wildly divergent from the books it's anyone's guess at this point? Multiple "still alive in the books" characters killed last season? Weird storyline about religious homophobia added in some ripped from the headlines bullshit? Second season 6 trailer just dropped? 13 days? Red Wedding 2.0? Mormonts/Sansa Stark revenge? Tower of Joy flashback? Cleganebowl?

Is anyone else pumped on this mediocre show with excellent if innacurate costume design? Or the substantially better books? Should i go back to the reddit hype train and leave y'all alone?

I enjoy Game of Thrones.

It has boobs and battle axes. I have yet to find something that featured both that I didn't enjoy* (although I also prefer the books).

On that note, have you read any of The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant? I think you might dig it. I mean maybe not, but I suspect that you would.

*I'm totes stealing that. "Of Boobs and Battle Axes."

First of all, holy crap yr at 19999 posts.

Secondly, yeah, show loves sexposition and such, and I too love battle axes. I have not read that, but i am gonna have a lot of free reading time soon, so i will see if my library has it.

Mostly i was just pumped by the new trailer, and wanted to talk about it, but i am easily excitable, also.

That Season 6 trailer has me so pumped.

Walking Dead is better though!

Don't get me wrong, season 6 was the best Walking Dead season in a long, long while. A lot of characters died, but it was a good and necessary pruning, and the ending was a lazy gotcha, but i could watch the scene where Carol and Maggie burn the saviors on the kill floor with gas and a cigarette every dau.

But holy shit the trailers and spoilers that have already leaked for season 6 of GoT, coupled with the fact that the shows are so off-book it's anyone's guess at this point. Get hype, you know? They're bringing back the Ironborn and maybe Ramsay and his 20 good men will finally lose their plot armor and get fucked by the alliance of the Mormonts, the Umbers, the Mountain Clans, and the Free Folk, and they showed a wedding/feast with Walder Frey presiding over a bunch Lannisters so maybe revenge finally? Plus, all but confirmed that The Hound is returning. And Cersei still has to lose one more child, according to prophecy. And Peter Dinklage is gorgeous, so whatever.

Also the books are some of my favorite historical fiction/fantasy. Just wish the new one was out yet.

Guysssssss the Walking Dead sucks so baaaaaad. I think I'd honestly rather watch Fox News.

That aside, I'm conflicted about the new season of GoT. Some of the previous diversions from the book have bummed me out, but now that the new season will live in some nebulous, unwritten territory... I just dunno. So whatever happens this season might take place in the books once GRRM finally releases another one? Or maybe it'll be something totally different in the books? I don't know why exactly I find that so fucking frustrating.

Okay, so
NSFW: show
killing Mance and Bartistan and Stannis last season was so dumb, not to mention the whole abortion of a Bad Pussy Dorne plot, Hardhome was trite fan service with a casual dose of misogynistic tropes about motherhood, Myrcella, Shireen, Meranda, etc. etc. And the baffling plot point that a group of nobkes in masks could consistently out-strategize and out-fight the most elite and disciplined soldiers in the fucking world, who seem incapable of remembering their training when the plot demands it...
were all missteps. Like grievous ones. Season five sucked. But hope and hype are only one letter apart.

Indeed to all of that... I think that's why it really worries me, because they had plenty of book to work on without those diversions. The new season could be great, but going fully off book could be like season five on steroids. Fingers crossed it isn't.

I guess we are having opposite reactions to the same event. Season 5 so thoroughly disappointed me, i feel like they can get away with anything now. It sorta worked. Like, i have made my peace with the fact that the show, despite leaning so heavily towards it in the first three seasons, is not going to be as deep or thoughtful. They are clearly Playing the Others straight as evil baby stealing ice demons, where everything George R.R. Martin says and has written in past novels leads one to believe that it will be far less easy than that. Whereas the books punish you sort of, for wanting to support war causes, the show just punishes us for liking characters. So fuck it, they're probably gonna tack on a cheesy as shit ending, and it is so clear the showrunners favor Dany, but in the meantime fantasy battle scenes in the snow and wonderful costume design and some of my favorite genre actors (though sadly we've lost a few, recently).

I find people who complain about divergences from the books to be completely insufferable. I read the books. The first one was awesome. Most of the plotlines in 2 and 3 were were fantastic, others were interminably awful. Books 4 and 5 were fucking TERRIBLE. I think 90% of the divergences that they've done in the show have improved the story. Now that they've left the books mostly behind, I'm fucking excited that they won't be tied to George's deteriorating writing any longer.

I am not gonna argue with you for liking the show more. I think the show is poorly written, kills off characters for the sake of doing so, and relies on a lot of cliched writing, personally, but here i am, super hyped to see a battle in the North episode and maybe watch Ramsay lose his stupid plot armor. I'll never forgive the show for 20 Good Men and Bad Pussy, but seasons 1-3 were some of my favorite period piece fantasy television ever. Also FeastDance dragged, and were unnecesarrily huge, but they set up a lot of my favorite characters and plot points. I can't tell you how pumped i am to find oit what happens to the various Greyjoys/Iron Islanders, or what will happen when the North fights back against the Boltons in the books. Plus characters who didn't make the cut for the show, like Lady Stoneheart, are great.

Even without the recent divergences, I don't think the show has even remotely compared to the richness of the books. It's fucking impossible with a story so complex, and beyond that I feel like it's almost always the case with book vs film. Not to say that I don't enjoy both, and specifically regarding GoT I have enjoyed watching the show—I just prefer the books. FWIW I thought A Feast for Crows was the only one that fell far short, but I didn't want my time refunded after reading it.

Insufferable as fuck.
