Hi guys,
I want to start recording something with my Squier Bass VI. Usually I've been recording my JM through my pedalboard, into a presonus audiobox, into garageband. Now with the Bass VI I feel like the sound is very weak. Do I need some kind of bass preamp?
What do you use for recording?

Have you tried just plugging the bass VI straight into the interface and loading up one of the bass amp models to see if it changes the sound at all?

I either (or a combo of both, since I can) go DI into a Boss GT-001 through the normal pedalboard, or record through the amp.
No issue like you're describing.
I'd look at levels and EQ first-off.

Is the strangle switch activated? I run mine through both guitar and bass rigs, recording with miked amps or SansAmp Character pedals into my interface. Never had an issue. When playing it like a guitar I use the strangle switch and keep it on the bridge pickup for the most part. When using it like a bass I usually keep the strangle off and use the middle or neck pickups, or any combination of the three.

Yea, I'm fairly similar, except I pretty much use the middle pickup as default for everything.
Add/remove them as needed, it's old hat after playing a Jaguar for so many years.

I run my VI through a Mesa Mark III and a Sunn Concert into a 15 with a Sennheiser 421 on the Sunn and a Heil PR30 on the Mark III and I get a great mix of deep bass and some crunchy mids. I personally mic everything even bass, I've never liked DI tones, they just never sound as good to me with my recordings at least.

So "dullness" to me sounds like it's probably just the limitations of your audio interface's preamps unfortunately.

I record mine with an audix d6 on a bass cab, a sennheiser e609 on a guitar cab, and a clean DI for reamping/messing with in software.
