Bands that learned to play their instruments as they went

What are some?

I know Pavement and Mayhem took that approach, for sure.

EDIT: To clarify, I mean bands that didn't really know how to play their instruments when they started out. Obviously every band is learning to play their instruments as they go!

Obviously some members of the Sex Pistols.

Apparently the Depeche Mode guys learnt to synth as they went. Gary Numan as well.

I saw some doco on Parkway Drive and they said their bass player at the time they got huge had never even picked one up before, but was just a mate who was available to go on tour.
And now those cunts are one of like four bands who are able to make music for a living in this country.
The whole thing sickens me.
Mostly because they're shit.

I have no idea how true it actually is, but Sepultura allegedly didn't learn that guitars needed tuning until they went to record their first record.

I was gonna say this one, but I don't think he plans on getting any better.

Guitarist from Iron Butterfly had barely played before recording "In-a-gadda-da-vida".

Also, bass player from Flaming Lips, if I'm not mistaken.

No argument here. I never got what people saw in them. Also, real original, a scene band named after a street. Kill me. Signed, Lorraine Drive, Boyce Avenue, Second Avenue, Every Avenue, Christie Front Drive...

ANYWAY, Thrice, who are definitely not shit, boast of pretty much exactly the same story. Eddie is just Riley's brother, Riley being the drummer and secondmost technically talented member of the group. In the liner notes of one of their records it says Eddie went from not knowing what a bass was to building his own bass in under a year.

You don't need to hate them for making a living either, Pope... I think they are a pastor, a menswear designer, and an advice columnist, now.

ANYWAY anyway.

This also reminds me of how in We Jam Econo Mike Watt tells the story in some detail of how he did not know that a bass had four thick strings when he went to buy one but wouldn't admit it to save face with the shop owner...

Re: Thrice, I got the story backwards, Eddie joined first. Wiki:
Breckenridge joined Thrice having virtually no experience playing the bass (he was a skating buddy of soon to be singer/guitarist Dustin and lead guitarist Teppei). He soon convinced his brother Riley to join as the band's drummer. Breckenridge has an elbow problem that prevents him from turning over his left hand fully (making fingering the fret board more difficult than usual)

So we're seeing a big bass trend here
