Original post below:

Hi friends.

I had an idea. Or, I guess, I was exposed to the idea and decided to repurpose it after the "changing instruments" thread. Fuck burying the lede, here it is:

The folks involved generate a common pool of sounds -- the record that kicked off this idea called for white noise as the exclusive source but that's already been done and I'm not interested in copycatting that -- and then created pieces made up entirely only of those sounds on their own. This, it seems to me, is rather uniquely suited to the sorts of people who are on here already, since we have (and have had) some fairly substantial collaborative efforts going and we have folks that do interesting things with interesting sounds, to say the least.

Nuts and Bolts
NSFW: show
1-Each participant should ideally contribute 1-2 samples that will get compiled, zipped up, and shared with everyone involved with the project once all the sounds are submitted.
2- You can do whatever the fuck you want to the samples after you receive them, but the pieces should be comprised of just sounds derived from the common pool. i.e. don't take someone's sample and then write your own song that features 1-2 of the noises submitted, ya dig?
3- Formatting: WAV or AIIF is best, depending on if you're a Mac person or a PC person. They're both lossless, and they're easily interchanged without a noticeable loss in quality
4- If people are down, the project goes off without any massive hitches, and everyone involved submits something, this will almost entirely be a free digital release with no plans on my end for physical copies (and subsequently no cost to obtain or contribute). That's subject to change, of course, but it seems like the easiest and most painless way to do it. Any sort of sequencing/mastering/artwork/so on will be tackled at the appropriate time.
5- contact info. I've set up a project email for this, you can send samples here: ilovefuzzopensource@gmail.com. That is also the address that will be sending these out, so please hit it up with an email that you check.

I definitely think it's cool! Any requirements about sound length / duration, etc? Are you looking for drones, or are 1-shot samples / rhythmic tracks acceptable as well? Any specific file formats?

as for content of sample: it's all up to you, although if you send me a four hour drone, I might speed it up until it is 3 seconds long, and likewise, if I submit a snare hit you might stretch it to be four hours. What the sound ends up looking like is really beyond the control of the contributor, to some degree -- which might be an important thing to keep in mind here if you're inclined to submit something.

As for file format, I think WAV or AIIF is best, depending on if you're a Mac person or a PC person. They're both lossless, and they're easily interchanged without a noticeable loss in quality. Going to add that to the NFSW bit, for sure.

Anyone participating, it should be noted, will probably need a DAW/some kind of studio style setup for actually making music.

this sounds like fun
& might ignite my love of DAWs again.

But I'm also sitting on an unfinished remix for phantasmagorovich.
but this might speed up that process as well....

sooooo,
In if you have the room!
