Is this unit too noisy? Not noisy enough?

Re: Too Noisy?
Yes.
Which is to say, it all depends on context. It's too noisy for the kind of thing that I would put on my live board, but could be perfect for studio experimentation.

I'm more like a mids-ist than a bassist.

Too noisy for who?
I think it fits perfectly with the SoaringTortoise aesthetic.

The subsonics are a touch unruly, sounds great otherwise.
How did you approach the filament line? I think ousting heater hum would make running wide open a lot more feasible.

You hit the nail on the head. These are the troubles I run into when re-purposing old electronics as guitar effects.crochambeau wrote:The subsonics are a touch unruly, sounds great otherwise.

I try to use as much of the original item as possible. This unit is made from an old Japanese manufactured Midland tube FM (no AM) tuner. The only good thing it had going for it was an isolated power transformer. Unfortunately, it has three different heater filament taps (6.3v, 12.6v, and 17v) on the PT to deal with it's wacky tube compliment. I actually retained most of the original tubes except for replacing a pentode with a triode in one section, so all of the original filament wires were retained. There is an overabundance of filament wires. The oscillator uses a 17ew7 (the only nine pin tube in the whole unit) dual triode tube that used to serve duty in the tuning circuit and happens to be all the way on the other side of the chassis from the PT with it's very own personal filament wires spanning the length of the interior. I have spent some time arranging the wires for the least noise possible, but it is still noisy.
