Everything! They cannot really be compared, because they are totally different beasts. I love my HM-2 through and through and I only like one setting of the MT-2.
Tomorrows big comparison:
Apples vs. Oranges

HM-2 is better in virtually every way, but as mentioned they really are two entirely different pedals that just share a partial name.
In 2011 my bassist had an MT-2, and being only 20 and naive, I assumed it was similar to an HM-2 that shoegaze bands and Polvo used. We used a sound that sounded like a swarm of bees, and even though we weren't a noise rock band, it was kinda cool. Key word: kinda. I again can't stress that we were all 20 and stupid and didn't have girlfriends. I don't even remember what it sounded like.
HM-2 is just an absolute classic, though. A Turbo Rat/Big Muff crossover with an impressive EQ. It's insane how much range it can cover. I personally used it with the gain all the way down and a lot of bass, and it's a tone that really no other pedal can replicate.
Plus, Adam Franklin used one extensively on Raise, and, well, yeah. Those guitars are perfect.

Mt-2 is so underrated. It is a great pedal with an insanely powerful eq. It's easy to make it sound shit.
Hm-2 is more limited but easier to get good sounds. But it has a very distinct character.
Circuit-wise there are no similarities.

Yeah not even close.
I just recently started using my guitarist old HM-2 as my bass dist/fuzz and it is killer. Covers a lot of ground and cuts through well.
MT-2 can sound decent but not as good as the HM-2 IMHO.

MT-2 isn't bad per se, it's just so fucking vanilla.

MT-2 with scooped mids into a Boss GE7 with scooped mids and boosted his and lows is probably the sickest distortion tone I have heard. Somehow it becomes gated as fuck, and it just destroys your signal.
And the HM2 is a big one I regret selling. Definitely a fun and unique pedal from Boss.

Imma just say in general that grapefruit is way better than both apples and oranges combined. Plus apparently they prevent kidney stones and NO ONE wants that shit. If you like pissing stones out of your dick buy an mt-2

I wonder what pissing stones onto a contact mic through an MT-2 sounds like? Maybe also mic your pain-induced wailing, but that shit needs some reverb or something fuck a MT-2.

You guys are always making me want a HM-2 and then I go look them up and they aren't even cheap! I probably need to troll eBay for a while or something

I'm one of the few people to like the Metal Zone--with mids and lows boosted, highs cut, 50% gain it can sound alright. Cheap counterfeit to Josh Homme's tone.
