High Pass Filter into a Boost pedal vs a Treble Booster

Understanding that a treble booster isn't just an EQ pedal with the treble cranked up, I've been experimenting with a way to hold me over until I eventually cave in and buy a Naga Viper. I had some decent results running an Ibanez LF7 LO FI that was basically only using the high pass function going into an LPB-1. When the LPB-1 was dimed and then the high pass was turned up I could hear the muddiness go away and did something similar to what I imagine a treble booster does. I'm just wondering if this is pretty much the same thing or if there's some other part of the equation that I'm missing.

I'm pretty sure the old Rangemaster everyone likes was basically a high pass filter with a makeup gain stage
