I love this fuzz sound
think the crazy roars and screams in sleater kinney's the woods
but cannot find one except for somewhat expensive builds
been told a red llama is similar
but the demo tape fuzz can get way raunchier
thoughts fuzzheads?

i have a basic audio double beat which is pretty damn awesome. loud and open and raw, definitely a unique vibe.
it's not on his website anymore so maybe it's discontinued but whenever i've seen original double beats or clones go for auction they aren't terribly popular so maybe you'll find a good deal on something if you can keep your eyes peeled for a while.

Not sure the Double Beat was ever on the Basic Audio website. It's more of a custom build.
The Red Llama's more of a distortion than a fuzz.
The Demo Tape Fuzz can indeed get way rauchy, but only when the gain is cranked.
The Double Beat schematic's out there. Build one or get someone to build you one.

yeah I love that sound
anybody compare these fuzzes in person
leaning to the demo tape because of the eq section?

i got it from a dealer and have seen several with the same finish floating around so i think it may have been somewhat of a production pedal at some point, not sure.
i think there was one in b/s/t not too long ago as well. he'd probably build one at request, huh?
the double beat is certainly raunchy through most of the gain range, more of a full on fuzz than the other stuff listed. i think it cleans up alright with the guitar vol knob though.
the tone knob on the basic audio one is very useful but probably limited compared to the bass/treble on the DTF. up to you whether that control is necessary, certainly doesn't hurt.

Roland double beat is a favorite of mine. The three gain stages/waveforms or whatever all sound pretty different from one another allowing you to get a lot of different sounds...not to mention the wah that can be used making the pedal REALLY versatile. Never owned a red llama so shouldn't really comment, but I thought that was an od? Maybe youre talking about getting that particular sound on that recording though. Do have a demo tape fuzz but I don't make any connection between the two? I might think more of the bee-baa if I wanted similar territory, but it might be some weird Roland connection my brain is making...don't think I've ever a/b those two together.

Yeah, I'm sure if asked, he'd probably build one.

The "Fuzz" in the name is sort of a misnomer. Really only gets fuzzy, as I said, with the gain full on. It's meant to emulate what a 4-track or overloaded recording console will do to your signal. The Demo Tape Fuzz is way more versatile than most fuzz pedals.

Yeah, it's pretty much an overdrive.

There's a used BA Double Beat for sale here in NO that I've got my eye on, hopefully still there when I can afford it... So that might be my next fuzz.
A tenuous Sleater-Kinney connection also sounds good to me. Do you know if it's actually that one (the original or smth else) on the album, decomposing? Is it maybe Carrie who uses it?

I think Tucker?
whoever uses it, she says it's like her secret weapon.
just need one that's bass friendly.
oh and don't worry, I blew my load on a megalith clone with all these clipping options.
I'm in love with fuzz. and da bass.

The double beat is a favorite of mine. If you wait for one to pop up as an ebay auction you could score one for around $200. I got both my bee baa and double beat at that price point.
The double beat was also abused all over White Zombie's Astro Creep 2000. Check that out if you want to hear more of that beast doing its thing.
