EHX Big Buff, wich model?

Hi there, I've started a new band after I wasted my last years in computer music and I sold all of my gear. Now I'm on a budget, I live in Europe and the Dollar is stronger than Euro  , so buying boutique stuff became more expensive and actually I am moneyless.
I'm divided betweetn the Deluxe Big Muff Pi and the Big Muff with Tone\Wicker, I dunno which one I should buy.
The DBMP seems have more (and usefull) features, maybe the gate is cool for super gated muff fuzzines, but the MID boost\EQ section seems useless for me because I have many od or distortions with separate EQ. (but the bass boost looks interessing)
The BM T\W seems have more clarity with the wicker On, I can bypass the Tone Knob and I can Stack it with my od with their Eq.
I forget to say actually I play noise music, like Sonic Youth or Blonde Redhead, and I need a Muff for a wall of sound for chords and I need strings clarity.

Thank you!

Fuzzhugger Algal Bloom!

Have a look at Tom's wares.

viewforum.php?f=142

Can do Muffy, Fuzz Facey, Ratty, and also keeps 6 note string clarity whenever you want.

Yup, CBA beat me to it. And if you want something heftier than the Algal (which is plenty hefty on its own), the Doom Bloom offers exponential heft.

lets come clean here and admit we were all hoping that EHX actually released a pedal called the Big Buff.

^came here to be exited about that. Oh well.

As far as muffs go, I agree on the algal bloom suggestion. Another really cool one that I've been aching to try is the Earthbound Audio Supercollider. One thing: there are an infinite number of totally super cool muffs built by people who are super cool as well. Whatever you do, don't go new production EHX. Buying from small builders doesn't necessarily have to be more expensive than EHX really, especially used and right here in the B/S/T section :)

yeah as a long time flag waver for ehx purity, it's time to admit there are MUCH better options in the diy world.

i'm a big fan of the supercollider as well, but idk (not my world expertise in usage) about the string clarity on them.
maybe the 71 version is best for you?

It's just a buffer in an old gigantic muff enclosure.

hey man

Although soundwise it's pretty cool, one thing with the Wicker many people (including me) ran into is massive amounts of noise and the Deluxe seems way too tricked out and sort of lifeless to me :idk: (played both, just so you know)

i can absolutely recommend the Algal Bloom :) If you're on a budget, I recommend the Devi Ever Hyperion. Fucking awesome pedal for the price and can do Muff, just with a bit more mids (closer to the Wicker maybe actually)

Since you're in Europe, check out the link in my signature. You're welcome to email me through my website any time and we can talk about anything that might catch your eye :)

PS: I'm also thinking about letting go of my Maxon Ether - I know it's a Superfuzz, but if you're interested, PM me :hello:

Maybe find a used Sovtek Muff? The black and yellow ones can be had pretty cheap and can sound fantastic. If you go bubble font or tall font you will be paying a bit more but probably getting a muff for life. Which would be a funny thing to call a marriage.

Take a look at the fuzzes from Anarchy Audio. I got the 2nd to last Vagiant he ever made and it is really nice. It's basically a cross between a triangle and a violet Rams Head. It was $140 usd shipped. He is in Australia so the shipped price may vary for you. Either way it is slightly more $$ than the ehx models, but significantly cheaper than most of the other boutique pedals. While he doesn't make the Vagiant any more, he does have a number of other muff types, some similar. The guy is super easy to deal with and will give you personal attention and maybe recommend one of his models for you. Hth.

I'd probably go after an algal bloom if I was looking for a muff. I made a mistake and just went for a straight clone of a civil war big muff. I regret it. Doesn't matter much since I hardly use muffs anyways. Honestly probably going to sell it because I love my fuzzrocious rat tail so much more.

I'm not sure if you are considering anything else but get a Turbo Rat.
Not as "muffy" as a Big Muff but cheap, easy to buy and has that string clarity with complex chords with a dirt pot that goes from blooz to doom.

I guess I'll stand in support of the EHX Deluxe Big Muff. That and the Deluxe Bass Big Muff are the only two muffs I own and have any experience with, and I have no real need for more. I'll probably get more, but I think the DBM is a good start. The bass boost function is great, I always have it on. Remember that the mids section can be used to cut mids even more, which is how I use it. I get some nice (for me) sounds out of cranking back the mids and putting the bottom knob at around 9 o'clock.
