These fucking guys.

I love how the Sales brothers have this great groove, but still have this bizarrely herky jerky robotic edge. The Strokes pretty much modeled their entire catalog off of this song (and that's ok—it's a goddamn great song).

Just all of XTC. Also this video is the best thing in the world.

Lots of probably better examples of how subtly nice their interplay can be (definitely Narc), but the bed they lay down here is so damn dense but deft...

First thing that comes to mind.

So many of Joe Lally's bass parts sound really dumb played on their own but work so well with the drums.

^overdubbed bass or not that shit is pretty unreal.

Disco is garbage but Chic were/are disgustingly tight. Benny Benjamin and James Jamerson fall into that category too. Moon and Entwistle.
I would like to submit RZA and his drum machine for consideration to the tribunal.

I for one approve. Would also like to offer College Dropout Era Kanye's understanding of soul samples.

This is a CURB with a CURS. Traluma. Only released one record (Seven Days Awake, 1997) that's absolutely amazing. The bass player, Jim Marsh, died of cystic fibrosis in '99. The lovely record shop owner/Oslo punk legend who insisted I buy this slept-on CD in '00, Tor André Knudsen, died in '04. Who knows what could have been. RIP.
Other ones I like:
Mr. Bungle
The Cravats
Crass (for the different take on punk rhythm)
Siege
and all the different ones in Slim Cessna's Auto Club

Henry's Dress weren't "technically" impressive, but I feel like they had really good (or maybe the word is "effective"?) rhythm section:

(FWIW, I am not a musician. I can sort of play Mary Had a Little Lamb and some GG Allin songs on the guitar and that's about it.)
