Cheapest Motherfucking Bass

I'm a guitar player, if a baboon smacking a guitar is a guitar player. Mainly, it is an antenna for pedals. I'm also building more stuff, with an eye on selling it. I would like to get a cheap bass to test my creations with, but good enough that I'm not slapping a 2x4 with a pickup. What do y'all suggest?

Best of the bottom ($80-100ish) is probably going to be a Squire Bronco, an old Hondo bass, or an Ibanez Gio, but make sure you can try em before buying used.
You could probably find one of those CV squire basses for cheap used, too ($150ish).

Recent (past 5 or 6 years maybe) Squier stuff is usually really good. Chances are you can find some secondhand. hence even cheaper. There are tons of models, it depends what kind of stuff you want (short scale or long scale, what type of pickups, etc.).

yeah you can probably find a used classic vibe squier and those things absolutely kill. Very upgradeable if you want to go that way in the future too.

That's the best part, I'm really, really flexible on that. I'm leaning towards the Jazz Bass shape, but pickups, fretboard, none of that matters.

Check any shops nearby that have second hand stuff for sort-of recent Squier models then. Classic Vibe and Vintage Modified models are usually highly regarded. The Affinity ones are really entry level and probably not as good but they might actually be decent now. Squier sells a lot so chances of finding cheap second hand ones are higher than most other brands.

This is true.

Buddy of mine went and played an Affinity 5-String because it was something like $199 or so. It played 'okay' but the electronics were noticeably crap after he picked up a Vintage Modified bass. He said it played and sounded so much better. MORE BETTER, even. He ended up buying it for our "bassist" to use. Quotes because he's not actually a bassist, but you figured that out before I wrote this sentence.

That said. Used VM and CV models are your best bet for price/play-ability.

+1 on the VM Squiers being the dog's balls. I have a Squier VM Jag bass that sounds absolute tits. I actually went to the store wanting the bottom-end Fender and liked the Squier VM more. Ended up saving myself a couple hundred bucks.

Whelp, just traded for a VM 70's J Bass from colossus. That should do the trick.
