Cos I'm listening to him... I like him... I put a quote from him in my sig!
But I really can't decide if it's
A) Shit I like in spite of myself
or
B) Actually a pretty masterful pastiche of dubstep and similar genres
???
Let's hash this out.

Daniel Lopatin is awesome and you do not need to over-think about liking anything he does.
/thread
also the new album is great

Agreed, awesome. But has he ever done anything approaching dubstep? I actually haven't heard any of his releases since Returnal... got into him with Betrayed in the Octagon, which I bought the LP reissue of not too long ago. Liner notes list the instrumentation as Roland Juno-60, Sequential Circuits Six-Trak, Roland MSQ-700, voice & delay. The droning pieces that open each side are kinda spooky, but the rest of that record is amazing, particularly the title track.
I guess that's how he do, not afraid to be confrontational/noisy but also makes some achingly pretty kosmische synth compositions.
But yeah, the new stuff there sounds different than the earlier ones I've heard. Still like it, but I prefer it without/less beats.

Okay, not dubstep then. Electro-House. Whatever the young'ns are calling it.
See, I was thinking the whole way through
Garden of Delete, this is so structureless. Would it kill him to have a backbeat for longer than ten seconds?

I gather you're not into shrooms and weed.
With arpeggios like these, you don't need beats.

I've never smoked pot and certainly not shrooms
No judging though!
Music is a drug in and of itself, for me.

I pick option A.
Shit might be a bit harsh, but what I heard never really got me going. (I only listened to R plus seven alone and I think it was Commissions I at a friends' place.) To me it was pretty boring, because the music seemed so without anything going against the grain. I like it when the cracks show, when stuff is not perfectly played and not produced to a streamlined zeppelin-shape. I get how people can get floating to that shit when you're high, but on the other hand that is such an easy accomplishment.
Fuck, I'm gonna say the old man thing: I'd rather listen to OG Synthkraut.

I've never paid any attention to him but I'm looking forward to seeing what happens with Anonhi.

I think the new record's great.
His music in general can be a pretty uncomfortable listen at times, but to me it's just so fucking mesmerizing to hear what he's done and wonder how he got there. Sometimes more experimental-leaning electronic artists put me at ease—Tim Hecker's a good example. OPN, on the other hand, is more like some slightly acrid substance that makes me a bit sick, yet I can't stop coming back for more. In a good way of course, haha...

After about twenty-five additional full-album spins, I don't really give a shit about my OP question. For better or for worse, it is pretty darn good.
Actually he's got me in the mood for digging out old electronic classics. I listened to Fucking Consumer and Do You Know Squarepusher? today for the first time in... well, in way too long.
Thanks, Daniel!

Check out some of his offshoot stuff if you haven't—the Chuck Person record and Ford & Lopatin are both great.

I like his stuff well enough. He's sort of fun live too.
