Does anybody have any experience using purple LEDs for clipping?

Tell me stories.

Do different colors REALLY give very different results? Or is it possibly another factor like size? I don't know if that anyone has put some proper science time into this.....

Yeah, apparently, color matters. Red is supposed to be best (from what little I've read). Wondering about purple.

Not sure size matters. :D

According to the HUGE range of voltage drops here, I would wager that they do. I almost posted with the opposite opinion, but this chart:

Of course, there's more than that at play, but with a lot of clipping sections voltage drop is going to play a huge part in how it sounds. I feel this is why Si diodes sound "harsher" than Ge in your classic ground referenced clip stage, the Si leave you with twice as much signal to spill over into your next stage (mechanism of collector to base strap as seen in say, your usual big muff isn't ground referenced, but it IS subtractive phase, so the comparison stands).

Anyway, I had no idea there was such a range. I know different colors fire at different points, but this indicates an extremity I had not suspected.

Thanks, crochambeau, yeah, apparently how an LED sounds when it clips has to do with its forward voltage.

There's this old thread here (and numerous threads on DIY forums):

I'll bet the inefficient parts sound good if you hit them hard enough.

Now I'm wondering how infrared sounds too.

Should I stick some Violet LEDs in a muff and see how it sounds?

Only if it is a Violet Ram's Head.

but then that would make it NOT a violet rams head......

I have multiple led clipping options but I will reman vague and aloof about my preferences...

Could the same not be said for ANY muff then?
