Curious about various Wren+Cuff muff opinions...

Kinda been GASing for a Caprid for a while now, basically because I'd love an original ram's head but don't wanna drop what they fetch. Looking the Caprid up on here, it seems to have gotten quite a bit of love... nonetheless curious about more recent opinions of it and the rest of the W+C muff range. I have their TFR and love it.

Oh, and the reason muffs got re-stirred up in my mind was seeing the PGS demo of that new Thorpy FX Muffroom Cloud. I will say It sounds killer based on the demo, but 1.That Name (dunno, kinda can't deal), 2.That box (looks kinda extreeeeme bro), and if I'm gonna spend close to $300 on a muff clone, might as well think harder about the long-GASed-for Caprid.

Obv need to go play a couple more for myself, but still would love to hear what y'all think. Thanx!

Can't really help you with the w&c question, but I'm with you on that Thorphy pedlol.

No muff clone in the world sounds awesome enough to get away with an enclosure THAT ridiculous looking. Especially if you know that most of your $300 probably goes towards that stupid enclusure.

Anyway, I'm mainly here to subscribe and get notices when someone posts something that can inspîre my muff GAS.

That Thorpy kinda reminds me of the old Soldano GTO Supercharger, man do I miss that beast. Kinda salty on the price though, enclosure or not, its not like it's housing FS36999 trannies for those tried and true triangle tonez as that seems to be the basis for the Thorpy after reading the description.

I've tried out a few of the W&C Muffs and owned the Box of War at one point and feel they are the best quality straight up Muff clones. I also really like the Emanating Fist stuff as well. The W&C boxes also pass the ear test compared to the originals considering most Muffs vary slightly from one box to another.

Yeah, in a way I feel bad for saying I'm not a fan of the looks—he does seem like a really nice guy. I do know that from what I've read elsewhere, however, plenty of people are way into the enclosure, so I'm sure he'll sell plenty. Just not my cup of tea.

No continued Caprid users out there though? Have you flipped em and moved on to something cooler?

I don't have a Caprid, but I've got The White Elk. Which is close, just not as scooped. It's truly a fantastic sounding Muff. I love it.

Thanks, man—you were posting this right at the same time I was putting in my last reply.

Re: trannies, funnily enough I read that W+C found some original 2N5133s to use on the Caprids, then ended up scrapping em because they didn't sound that great. Makes me wonder if people get as precious with Muff transistors as they do something like a Fuzz Face. Seems not so much.

It was a limited Japanese release. You may have a difficult time finding one, but they're well worth seeking out. (They do pop up for sale here occasionally.)

Seems The Caprid would be based off of the later Violet Rams head after hearing about the trannies they wanted to use.

Probably wouldn't make for a good comparison with my Marveltone, as that is a first version Violet Rams Head that used the same FS36999's that some of the Triangle Muffs used.

FWIW I thought their version of the green russian sounded like absolute garbage compared to the ones I've owned?

Huh, interesting. I like mine a lot... I think it sounds particularly good with the treble on the higher side, like 3/4 of the way up, maybe a little less. From there I think it sounds great at lower gain settings, or maxed out w/cleanup via guitar volume knob. I will say that the bass gets a little ridiculous the lower you turn the tone knob. I'm sure a lot of people out there would really dig that for certain things, but I don't have a ton of use for it.

actually the problem with it was that it didn't have anywhere near the low end of the tall font I had at the time? Weird hey.
