so i got to thinking, how is it that we've all ended up on the same forum?
we all have such varied backgrounds, almost every demography in the free world is at least partly represented...and i do mean almost
so what _is_ our group dynamic, what are the things that shape us as a community, aside fromt he obvious "ooh pretty n0iz3s from lil b0x3z!" thang
there's something more, isnt there?

I would say that this is one of the few forums I've been on where n00bs don't get jumped on for asking something that long standing members may consider obvious. There's a good vibe around here and very little in the way of petty bickering that seems to frequent a lot of places like this. Everyone is allowed an opinion, and I think, I hope, we all feel able to share it without fear of being nailed to the wall.
That's why I like it here.

Once again, Aen has got it alllllllllllll figured out.
But for serious, I agree with what's been said so far- this isn't a harsh, flame war kinda place. There's pretty consistent talk about doing creative things with sound, across genres. In our music section, I've heard everything from sweet & soft music, to poppy, to prog, to angular post-punk, to death metal, to extreme noise... and they all co-exist pretty peacefully. There aren't many examples of what I think of as "tone elitists" here, even though we all have our own opinions about what constitutes "good" or "interesting" sound.
We're just nice people, goddamn it. And anyone who has a problem with that can go sit on a tack.

I dig the whole 'you can ask any question you want' vibe. I mean, yeah we'll get the occasional "hey help me pick out my nu fuzz" or "i want moar bass in my fuzz" question and we'll

. But we'll still answer the question without poking fun. It's not competitive here, it's a supportive community. I dig it. In college, the "there are no stupid questions" vibe is a complete lie. Here, not so much.

One of my favorite jokes:
There are no stupid questions. There are still bunches of stupid people who ask questions.

it's still not the kind of thing you want to hear in college. it aggrevates me, though. because if you don't know what you're talking about and you ask a silly question, the class looks at ya like yer crazy. and music classes around here (nj) are so rough because it's like a competition.

College music classes do have that odd dynamic. My wife studied flute for a while, but she was endlessly challenged for her first chair. It annoyed her enough that she switched to biology.

This and....
I think through the love of noise and fuzz we feel we have a common knowledge that if we can understand the beauty of noise, we can understand the beauty of anything one of us weirdo's throws out there.

That pretty much nails it for me.

Everyone in ILF needs to go to this site. May not be SFW.
