Tube Power Amp

so, does anyone have any insight into who makes good tube power amps that'd work for guitar? so basically, an amp head, sans preamp.

is there any pitfall to building an amp clone and just NOT putting the preamp in? using a separate preamp (say, that verellen one) obviously.

i have a sparkling image in my mind of just a blank box, one input sitting atop a cab (volume considerations understood).

I use a Peavey Classic 120/120 with a Verellen Meat Smoke Pre.
It's two separate 120w amps that can be bridged to 240w.
It's a pretty massive sounding rig.
If you don't need something that huge, I think they made 30 and 60 watt versions as well.

120w isn't a problem, i'm looking for amps for 'the big rig' so to speak!

anyone have experiences with the marshall ones?

I mean, good luck finding one, but maybe you could get someone (Verellen , Science, Dunwich?) to build you something like that?

I had a friend who had a Mesa 90/90 years ago and his rig sounded killer. I don't have experience to speak of with the Marshalls, but one of my favorite live bands ever, Asunder, had one of their guitar players using one every time I saw them and they sounded incredible.
