when I say folk I don't want to hear anything about getting shot in ww1 or working in the mines or crap like that

you were born in 1971 you've never seen a mine or worked in a field fuck off

also none of that mtv unplugged stuff I've heard most of that

Staying just in the '90s, see list below. Although the '90s were a golden era for alt-country, they were sort of slim pickin's for folk, IMO. Folk really has had a renaissance in the early 2000s that has continued through to today. Let me know if you want recommendations for that era.

Elliot Smith, Neutral Milk Hotel, Lullaby for the Working Class, Silver Jews, Songs: Ohia, Magnolia Electric Co., Bright Eyes (early career), Sebadoh, Jeff Buckley (well, he's straight-up rock, but folksy), The Mountain Goats (early career), Uncle Tupelo, Wilco, Son Volt, Bottle Rocket, Blood Oranges (not to be confused with R&B act Blood Orange), Whiskeytown, Gillian Welch, Drive-By Truckers (early career), Bela Fleck (solo)... it's a rich area...

Best bet is this album. On repeat. For life.

I have fallen asleep watching empire records for the past few years now and I'm pretty sure I could recite every from start to finish from it\

this lady was being called 'the next elliott smith' for about ten minutes in 1998. Don't know if it still holds up.

"Sinead O'Rebellion! Shock me shock me shock me with that deviant behaviour."

In that moment, for a few seconds, Renee Zellweger is my spirit animal LOL

Anyway, why not just go with Gin Blossoms, if that's the mood you're going for?

New Miserable Experience still kinda holds up.

Another album that holds up way better than it had any right to is Third Eye Blind. Damn, son, the feels.
