Fellas. Strats.

I don't really know what but I've been gasing for a strat super hard lately. I'm not even sure why because I've never played one. They've always seemed so lame to me. Thinking about building one. It'll be my first build. Any company make kits better than others? Or just go rondo and swap out stuff?

Anyone else like Strats? They've always just seemed so unfashionable to me. Maybe it's that my only guitar has been a one pickup/one knob guitar for like 2 years and all the options are intriguing me

So I never liked them but I got traded a Jimmy vaughan strat for an ibanez Hollowbody i was trying to sell with the idea to flip it but ended up really like it. I really like lower output single coils over humbuckers and the texmex pickups or whatever into a cranked amp just sound super trashy and fun. I will say I never use the inbetween positions, sounds weird to me. If your gonna build your own may as well go all Wayne kramer on it.

I love my strat. I wish I'd have gotten a thicker neck, but it plays and sounds great. Warm. Lightweight too, which my back appreciates. It's a Warmoth. Black korina body, canary neck. SSL5/CS69/Fat50 PU's. The toggle switch engages the neck PU no matter what position the five-way switch is in. That's about it. :)*

See you guys make them sound awesome. I love the idea of the switch just for the neck pickup. I don't even know what the inbetween spots are on the 5 way haha. I was kind of planning on pulling a skully and just having one pickup, but I kind of want the full strat experience. I'm at work so I've just been thinking about this. If I go weird maybe put some unique but rad pickup in the middle and make it so one of the 5 spots is just that one, so it essentially transforms the guitar in a jiff. Like a black winter or something. Go from normal guitar to dooming in a second.

The one cool thing about starts is that there have been so many made by everyone that you can piece them together easier than any other guitar. Peronally I have never gotten the appeal of the in-between settings or the middle pickup at all really.

Yeah i don't have a clue what I would do with that many options... but I think having a couple sounds great. I'll quietly spend the next few weeks researching and pricing stuff out. Maybe report back with questions.

I never use the mid PU by itself. The inbetween spots on the 5 way makes it so that two PUs are active at the same time, so either neck+middle or middle+bridge. With the neck PU toggle, I can also have all the PU's active at the same time or just neck+bridge (which is my favourite combination).

A pic of the back, because sexy grain.

The bridge and tremolo system suck and the volume knob is WAY too close to the strings. The five-way switch doesn't make much sense either. But a good Strat feels great and sounds even better. I tend to like Strats with the big 70s headstocks and rosewood fingerboards. They're just really functional, useful guitars. Look okay, too.

My favorite 5 way pickup combo that I have done using 3 pickups was a DiMarzio super distortion in the bridge, phat cat in the middle, and GFS 'wide range' in the neck. It sounded awesome and each position on the toggle sounded so different

That wood is rad. Too bad it's strat shaped.

28.whatever-inch baritone conversion neck and heavy strings will get you down to E-E...

Or scavenge a Squire VI neck from eBay and scoot the bridge back enough to get full 30" scale...

Also, I think UC has it right... hard-tail Strats are the best Strats...

Hardtail strats are totally the best strat
DC Kunkle on eBay sells a 30" strat conversion neck so you can get your bass vi on
