Is there a pedal that has the same sound as the Soft Focus patch on the Yamaha FX500? I'm looking into just buying the FX500, but it'd be mostly for the soft focus. I've heard the other patches are great too but if I can find a pedal with just the soft focus sound for cheaper, that'd be great! Anyone hear of anything like that?

Dramatis Persona had liked his results with a Zoom G3, I think. Zoom MS-100BT should be able to do most of the same stuff a bit cheaper. You can usually find an FX-500 for less, though, if you need precisely that sound.

If you want soft focus, just get an FX500- they're like $75.

Problem with trying to emulate it is that it uses a compressor, delay, reverb, and a special modulation, so you'd need a multi-fx that can chain 4 effects/ or multiple pedals. Which brings us back to just buy the fx500 and a cheap midi footswitch (shameless plug: I'm selling a digitech pds that I had got to use with my old fx500, but sold the unit before I got around to getting a midi cable...)

If you're dead-set on something with stomp switches, the m9/m13 can get your pretty close. The compressors don't give as much swell/sustain as the one on the fx though.

Alright, I'll probably just try to pick up the FX500 and run it in my chain with a bypass footswitch

There's even a "patch" that Zoom released a few months ago to nail the Soft Focus sound.

It's definitely not cheaper than the real thing but can do like 100x more.

I'll check it out if it's that versatile! Do you know if the patch actually stacks up against the real Soft Focus?

Kinda, FX500's sounds more lofi-ish and deep. I might record something for you this weekend if you really want.

Also, the default settings on the Soft Focus are way "too much" to use it for guitar without getting into muddy world in a matter of seconds.

Another good but not-so-modern alternative is the Yamaha Magicstomp, which can be had for ~$100 used if you are patient. And it has a lot of stuff too, Sympohonic algorithm included, which is the key to get the Soft Focus sound.
