Dear users,

Could you please help to identify the fuzzboxes/fuzzsounds used by Neil Michael Hagerty of Royal Trux? Even some general remarks would be nice! (I do know almost nothing about fuzz)

As a self-professed Trux fanatic, let's see...

Teeth, The Spectre - My first inclination would be to suggest a cranked low-watt amp before any pedal, from what I know of the era and Neil's general sound around then. He was never really into pedals that much, or even that concerned with gear - pretty sure he would've been playing an SG standard on Cats & Dogs and a tube amp. The end of Teeth's obviously got some extra gain to it, but if you wanted to get this type of sound though, you're in luck cause it's relatively easy - get a tonebender clone and play around with keeping your guitar volume down a bit to clean up the sound while still getting that slightly 'hairy' tone and then opening up to full for the louder parts.

Blue is the Frequency - Later period, but again I'd assume amp gain over a pedal. This was when they were recording in their home studio, so he could've used something particular just for that part that was lying around. I'd offer the same suggestion as the other two though - tonebender, maybe a rat and just keep the gain in that sweet spot.

I'm not that familiar with his Howling Hex stuff, but I think if you got close with the Trux sound you're interested in, you'd get close enough to the Hex track too. Good luck trying to cop his playing style though

I agree on the smaller amp cranked and play with the volume and the tone rolled back a bit, get some fuzzy with the tone rolled back right. I'd bet sometimes it was even solid state amp gain fuzz too, Jon Spencer does that alot.

Thank you both for the reply! I tried some things and it definitely worked out = It is indeed all about the volume knob.

And yeah... his playing style is something else. I've read that most of his guitars are (heavily) processed. NMH is an excellent producer/mixer.

yeah, once you've been into them long enough you just expect that. Not to say that it isn't entirely unjustified, depending on the era...
