have you ever sold/traded a guitar you had for a long time?

What were your reasons? Did you regret it? What did you replace it with?
I'm thinking about whether or not I should invest money into my Strat of 13 years to get it a new neck (it's a really thin 90s neck) or just cut my losses, sell it, and put all the money towards something I didn't choose when I was 17 years old and had very different tastes/needs. Just wanted to get some other experiences.

Get a guitar that you're happy with from the start.
You may get a new neck for the Strat and still may not be happy with it. Then you'll have to spend more money on it.

Yeah that's one of the things I'm worried about in my situation, I'd hate to buy it, install it, get it all set up and find out it still isn't for me. I gotta let go of my material attachments, and like, transcend the world of dust and shit

So many guitars, so little time.

i traded my first guitar for a pair of turntables & a dj mixer, back when I was kinda really stoned and not as into guitar at the time.
i kinda regret it because it was a beautiful guitar and my first but I also kinda don't because it eventually opened up a whole new world of making beats, sampling, synths all that shit that is here w/ me today (and more importantly kept me interested in music)
and then later on down the line, i wanted to get back into guitar so I ended up w/ a different styled guitar that I really like playing and is much more comfortable to play for me (feels really nice in my hands). so all in all, it worked out. oh and i ended up finding devi ever pedals around that time, which led me to her forum, which eventually became ILF! so I could tell u this boring story! whewwwww

Yep, I had a black finish Gibson Les Paul Custom that I had setup for B standard tuning, with a BKP Warpig in the bridge that I owned since 2003. I traded it to Nick at Dunwich Amps for a custom 300W tube head build. I had nearly saved up to buy said amp anyway, when I mentioned something to him about how I was starting to think about selling it to pay for some other gear purchases. He joked he'd take it in trade for whatever amp I want and I said sold if he was serious. It was an awesome sounding guitar, but by that time I had been totally over Gibsons. I prefer Fender scale length and neck profile and hate playing instruments with front binding. Plus, I'm primarily a bassist and I already have basses I really like, including a custom one. I bought the Gibson initially because it was "THE GUITAR" in my mind growing up, so when I could finally afford one it felt awesome to have, but it was always my least played guitar. I liked the the idea of the guitar more than the guitar itself. I ended up getting a Carvin Bolt Plus, which is kind of a super strat style guitar with dual humbuckers, setup at the factory for B standard. I know it's not as cool to the rest of the world on appearance and for bragging rights, but I like playing it more and play it way more often. Plus it cost like a third of the price or less, so it was a really practical replacement over all for me.

Traded a MIM Fender Strat with two hum buckers that I'd had since 2006. I'd barely played it since 2008.
Was one of the trade fodder that resulted in my Les Paul

Thanks for sharing, It's encouraging to know you guys didn't look back on your tradeups! I just played a Reverend today and it completely reversed my ambivalence. It was better than my Strat in almost every way, except for perhaps body comfort, which is for the soft-bellied bourgeoisie so who cares.

Ya know, when I was a kid I was extremely sentimental about EVERYTHING. I could attach meaning to a scrap of paper and I could never throw it away.
At some point in my life the switch turned on and I realized it's all just stuff and the meaning and memories lie within me and not the object.
Now that I make guitars (to bring the point home) I have a very healthy disrespect for them. They're just bits of wood and glue and wire.
If you've had your time with it and no longer want it then pass it along to someone who might be hoping to find that one and get yourself the guitar you desire.

I needed cash and sold an 80's Charvel I had for about 16 years, It did sell for more then I paid for it at least and went to a metal kid? I miss it sometimes but I barely played it the last year or 2 before it sold.

I had reservations about selling a guutar a loved but rarely played. It wasn't perfect but was really nice. I traded it for another guitar that I felt similarly about, but then I traded that guitar for a bass that I absolutely love. I've haven't thought much about that guitar since.

Yes. I sold my first bass as well as the spares. hahaha. I had one bass since I was 14. So that's 16 almost 17 years. No remorse. I hadn't touched it in years. Plus it needed work.
My MTD right now, I couldn't see myself selling it. I've had it about 2 years. But who knows? I don't like closing off the options on instruments. There's always something I'd like to try.
It'd be great to keep them all, but that just doesn't make sense. Financially or otherwise. At least not to me.

I traded off a 1991 EBMM SR5 that I had for over two decades. I had gigged a lot and recorded an album with it. At the time, it was a fit of GAS that made me do it. Now I regret it somewhat, but only for sentimental reasons. I don't play 5 strings anymore, and don't want to, and I also can't handle heavy basses anymore either, so it probably would have just been gathering dust. I'm happy that it is being played and loved, but if I won the lottery, I'd buy it back for sure. I do love my current basses though, so I can't really say I have any regrets.

there's a few I kind of regret.
Sold a MIM strat I'd had for about 8 years to buy some pedals. Which I sold. It was my favorite Fender and had changed hands quite a bit. I figured I'd be lucky again and be able to buy it back.
about 5 years ago old my second guitar, a flame-top blue Jackson Kelly I bought it at Mars Music if that tells anyone about the age of it. It made me swear off Floyd Roses.
Sold a Phiga guitar, it was nice but never got used. Wish I had it for the trem. So I could see how it likes 11s.
Gothic SG....
Les Paul studio Raw Power....
I try to live without regrets but it is a shame to just keep instruments I don't use and won't use except out of a misplaaced feeling of obligation.
