ah well ,this is probably easier:
but to tell you the truth, as much gear as I own and love, this is the setup I'm using right now:
I'm actually writing better tracks using just Ableton and Push and all software and samples than I've ever done. Sometimes less is more, or maybe rather a good interface means everything. I read something Brian Eno said once, it was like "I have this new keyboard (DX7) and it's got thousands and thousands of possible sounds, but I'd rather have a keyboard with just
six REALLY GOOD sounds."
If any of y'all are newbies out there, don't be scared. It ain't the gear that counts. I made my first record at 16 with a shitty SS amp line direct to a RatShack 4-channel mixer + keyboards (the Yamaha PSR kind) with in-built rhythms recorded to cassette (I didn't even have a much-wanted-then 4-track, so I bounced multiple cassette recorders down to get my tracks). I made my second album with a POS General Midi Yamaha keyboard and a bunch of samples I got for free off the intarwebz.
Gear gives you creative options, but I'm a firm believer that you have to
know your shit. This means probably a few pages of arcane manuals so you remember that Function+left button access the midi setup page or some shit like that. It means knowing how to tweak and twerk dem' knobs to get what you want, not just 'something'. Look at the Eurocrack-heads, listen to their shit; like a ton of it isn't even mediocre, its straight up terrible. And I should know, because I spent 2 fucking years doing nothing but eurocrack and my production during that time went back to basics and I sucked. Until I learned the gear.... Modular-land gives you so many possibilities that are opened up by the drug of 'one more cable from here to there...' that send you spiraling down an eternal abyss of self indulgence and deep modulations. Yeah it sounds kind of cool...to you.
Deadmaus is some kind of weird reverse pedophile and broadcasts a webcam from his studio, or so I've been told. As reported, he got a new Eurocrack module called 'Rene' which is a sequencer. He hooked it up and couldn't figure it out for like 2 hours. I didn't need to watch to know that was hilarious, here is the biggest EDM producer in the world confounded by how to send fucking gate out of Rene. And honestly, I have had Rene for years and its not hard to use at all if you read the fucking first page of the manual. Another example of how someone lost time because they went down the gearhole.....
With all that shit I listed, I had some serious cabling running to ten 48-point patch bays. I got good enough with that system that I could patch my studio from 'normalled' to anything I wanted in minutes and was fluid with ideas. It *can* be done. But it takes time and effort to maintain those skill levels, something I'm losing out on these days. So in a sense, software and simpler interfaces enable me to continue to make music, but do so faster and with more effect than I used to have in the same amount of time.
Oh yeah I noodlez on guitar alsoz...
