Since ILF is all about SPONTANEOUS GAS, I have a completely un-thought-through question:

Has anyone tried guitar pickups in basses IN CONJUNCTION with bass pickups? I just saw samzadgan's silverburst thread, and my first thought was MY GOD THERE ARE MATT PIKE SIGNATURE PICKUPS!!!!!

And I'm working on a (woefully un-updated) custom bass project that involves jazz and ric humbuckers... and suddenly I'm all "HOW ABOUT I THROW IN A HIGH ON FIRE GUITAR HUMBUCKER WHILE I'M AT IT?!?!?!!?!"

I've heard that Fender uses Strat-type pups in some of their short-scale Squier basses (the Bronco, in particular), so... it's doable, right?

Somebody please tell me that this is a horrible idea, even if it's not, just so I don't have to spend more cash on this.

Except, no, not really, I'm hoping someone tells me to go for it, and that they did it and it sounds awesome. Because this is ILF.

Bass VI uses normal Jaguar pickups and there's plenty of bass. That's really all the experience I can offer.

my Wishbass has a Lipstick in it, and it sounds pretty cool.

I know people have done it with rail pickups. I've always wanted to slap a pink x2n in the bridge position of a P-bass...

I've got a lipstick pickup in my Musicmaster bass. I find it works really well with effects and doesn't sound thin at all.

It used to have the original strat pickup (meh) and a Dimarzio rail pickup (better). So it's not crazy at all.

The old Danelectro used the same lipstick pickups in both their guitars and basses. So, yeah, as these guys've said, it's not really a problem.

Yeah, now that I'm coming down of that initial OHMYGAWDYOUGAIS burst of GAS, I'm trying to decide if including a guitar pickup will really add anything to the sound (other than obvs ILF overkill appeal). The idea of this instrument will definitely be an EAT THE BANDWIDTH cover the spectrum kind of sound, so I'm wondering if between the ric and jazz humbuckers, I'm well covered... or if the addition of gee-tar pickups will add some extra flavuh that I need.

Ric pickups are really guitar like, 51 P bass pickups are pretty much guitar pickups.. jazz pickups are thinner than some guitar pickups.. Dano pickups are the same for everything, I've a few guitar pickups on bass and had interesting results.. but.. for the most part in the end the difference wasn't very much other than average "metalz" buckers are mushy for the most part.

The only "big" issue is that the string spacing will be out of whack with the pole piece spacing on the pickup. The volume going from one string to the next may jump a bit. But if the pole pieces are adjustable you might be able to compensate. Don't we need to finish your current bass project first or is this one and the same...?!!!
