Well there are many roads you can take here

If it's the world that's bringing you down you can go the Radiohead route

Or if it's a "my job sucks, I got no money and I might be evicted" you can go the older albums of Modest Mouse/The National/Crooked Fingers route.

If it's a slow decay then I would shoot for Low/Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds/Mount Eerie/Joy Division/Smog/Erik Satie/Grizzly Bear/Godspeed You Black Emperor/Bonnie Prince Billy(I See A Darkness could be the saddest album ever)

Or if it is some jezebel who is kicking your heart around, I would go with The Smiths/Sun Kil Moon or Red House Painters/The Wrens/Ryan Adams (Heartbreaker is perfect for this occasion)/Leadbelly/Bon Iver/Leonard Cohen/Ugly Casanova/Nick Drake/Dinosaur Jr (Believe it or not if you really listen to the lyrics on the older albums it's pretty depressing, Uma Thurman really fucked good ol' Jay up pretty bad back in the day)

And last but not least there is Elliott Smith, but tread lightly friend because this is basically like handing somebody a suicide kit and I don't want to see you or anybody end it like he did.

That's my ten cents buddy. I hope this sad music will turn you around and bring your spirits up again knowing you aren't the only guy bumming around out there.

Listen to the songs Bunny Gamer, Little Panda McElroy and Fabulous Muscles (but only these) by Xiu Xiu, The Microphones, some older Bright Eyes or Death Cab, Storm & Stress, Summerteeth era Wilco.

I love sad music, whenever I'm sad I listen to it and it makes me feel worse. But I like that... :idk:

Dude, The Smiths is the way to go for self-pity and sadness.

All of the above will help you settle into a deep state of dark misery very nicely, but I'll add a few to wallow in... Jose Gonzalez, Nick Drake, Kings Of Convenience, Sufjan Stevens, PJ Harvey, sigur ros...

by my bloody television
for bands there've been some great suggestions and I would only add Ecstasy & Wine by My Bloody Valentine and Murray Street by Sonic Youth. There are probably more, but I'm at work and don't have access to my music library.

OF COURSE, you can NEVER go wrong with the delta and country blues. Blind Willie McTell, Oscar Woods, Skip James, Robert Johnson, Charley Patton, Son House, the list goes on... :bob:

if you like Belong, i dont need to blabber about it...

dont know if you are into tape recordings...

sons of magdalene, was a side project from Joshua Eustis (telefon tel aviv) this one is dark and celestial at the same time, and only released DIY 100 copies of it, long time ago sold out. one of those mysterious albums that get buried by time, only to be unearthed by lucky nostalgics. i spent months trying to get a copy, until i get a hold onto somebody who had it and diligently shared it, guess he got my point about people especulating on ebay with it and the rest of the world being unable to enjoy it.

this one is no random recording looped and layered, this one was conceived as a piece, somewhere i had the diagram/sheet/annotations... but i cant find it.

so in this frame of mind, if i have something to share 3 things with this forum, one would be THE link

The Cure, specifically "Faith" and "Pornography", if they don't make you cry like a baby and then break every mirror in your house in a wild torrent of self-loathing lunacy, nothing will.

Dorfmeister said A Silver Mt Zion on his list that would definitely be a good choice, especially the latest, 13 Blues for 13 Moons. Well, it works for me. Or He Has Left Us Alone, But Shafts Of Light Sometimes Grace The Corner Of Our Rooms

If it hasn't already been said maybe The Frames, some mid-career Nick Cave

Some serious taste going on here. Last time I was down I played 'Kind of Blue' from Blue In Green onwards, Miles knows your sorrows.
