I just ordered a Big muff clone kit and I was wondering if I could get some suggestions on the kind to build. the kit comes ready to build:
Triangle Version
Ram's Head Version
Violet Ram's Head Version
Late 70's (3rd) Version
Green Russian Reissue Version
Black Russian Reissue Version
GGG Tuned Version
I will be using this for bass and I am looking for a nasty fuzz. I am leaning toward the Ram's head version based on video reviews i.e. bass fuzz.com. You cats seem to know what your talking about so what do you think? Also any good mod would be appreciated.

When I put together the Hair of The Dog (my forthcoming bass distortion)i started with the basic "green muff" and tweaked for a little more gain, (connected the emitters of the transistors on the clipping stages directly to ground) and put 1uf caps on the input and output. I don't know if any of the 'offical' models are liek that, but it's a good start.

The I added a gate, and blend, played with diodes, and all that crap.

Butin general, I think if you have slightly bigger caps on the input and output really any version should do the trick.

the green muff is pretty well regarded for bass, and its my favorite muff ive ever heard anyhow, i'd say do that one

Green Russian Reissue Version = some say the overall best muff, but im not shure, somewhere i read that part of that was that this one had the best components in all muff eras
Black Russian Reissue Version = another classic sound you have heard a lot, on this one im most provably lying, but i just hear it a little less muffy and a little more normal distortion, maybe darker because the lower gain, also the tone is not the same, but maybe is just the way i hear it...
GGG Tuned Version = my fav, lots of volume, more wide tone, same great sustain as muffs, and correctly tweaked gives great definition even in power chords, i also have one with germaniums and sounds a bit more rounder, a bit less gainy and more muddy on chords

also i read an article that says that if you remove clipping stages [...] it gives less gain, but more tone spectrum and even more volume, leaving it like an anabolic infused overdrive, but just cant nail where i read it. and well all that depends, i cant get enough GGG tuned, it's a BIG muff with king kong balls, and use it for bass.

and you have to try devi ever's Bass Fuzz (later to become "black hole" something) it's just plain amazing and fits what you want, endless lows and devastating gated fuzz, but if you want a screaming fuzz to kill small animals i would go for the destructo noctavia. the point is that you cant deprive yourself of the joy in trying them for yourself.

if you google "big muff mods" you'll find a LOT of info.

Maybe the clipping diodes but to remove the clipping stages entirely, you'd have a clean boost going into clean boost, which would give a very mild overdrive.

I'd say it probably means removing the clipping diodes, which will increase gain, volume and smooth out the fuzz.

Anyway the green is the way to go.

green for sure. i sold mine after the 2 or 3 time i misfired the janky ass footswitch on it.

now i stick with a brassmaster clone prescription makes
