Bad Stone

Just saw the official vid for the EHX Bad Stone reissue and like what I hear. Making the rate even slower than the original is a plus, I pretty much only use a super slow sweep on a phaser. So, will manual mode emulate the cocked wah sound of Zappa and Ronson?

I wish they'd added an expression input for the manual mode, if it had that I'd buy it instantly. Still sounds good though, surprised it's taken them this long to reissue it.

This is the main complaint I've heard so far. I wonder if it would be an easy mod to add an expression jack or if it's a rehouse job? Hopefully someone can post a gutshot soon.

They've been out for a week and a bit, I'm very keen on them.
Good to see a real demo because that NAMM video sucked hard.

I'm guessing it would be a rehouse job. Probably all smd components and board mounted pots.

Yeah probably, all the other little EHX pedals are. I guess I'll just have to buy another faye sing when I can afford it.

I have an original big box Bad Stone. Not sure what year. I always liked it way better than the smaller version Small Stone, including the reissue! Best phaser I ever tried other than MAYBE a vintage Mu-Tron Bi-Phase. When I bought mine back around 1991 used from a local store they had a Mu-Tron as well. I went back and forth and ended up with the Bad Stone (which was considerably cheaper).
Anyway, the manual switch is not a cocked-wah sound. I really like it because there is nothing else like it, and it comes in SO handy with my old vintage strat with only a 3-way selector. When you put it in manual, it sounds like that "in-between" sound on a strat (the 2 & 4 position on a 5-way switch). It is of course affected by the pickup being used. So, if you have a strat on the bridge pickup and use it, it sounds like that 2 position bridge+middle out of phase sound, only a little brighter. Put it on the middle pickup and it sounds brighter than the 4 position, warmer than the 2 position, etc. The best part is that although there is a little bit of volume loss, it is no where near the amount of loss as when using the 2/4 positions on a strat. Also since it is not truly the same as the strat 2/4 position, it tends to cut through a little better in a mix. Even disregarding the brightness/warmess factor it is not EXACTLY the same as a strat's 2/4 positions, but it is SO close. GREAT for getting an out of phase funky tone on something like a 335 as well!

Hey @brain21, thanks for the info and welcome to the board! Hopefully the volume drop issue has been addressed with the re-issue. I actually don't mind a bit of a volume boost with an effect (like with the Phase 90 I currently use), but a major drop in volume is a deal breaker.

got mine
tried it at jambroni tonight
sounds so freakin good
i dont think i said it in this thread
but i have an original bad stone here as well
gonna do a A/B this weekend
crucify me if you want
but i dont miss my V4 smallstone at all
this thing can sound so evil
and has that basic smallstone phase as well
theres a little more room in the maxed rate knob
not sure if thatmakes sense
but lets say that 9 to10 is beyond normal phasing
where the gurgling low end shit is
on the black russian sounded like an underwater drum kit
the new bad stone has a bunch of sounds to mess with there
i left it maxed tonight
i have it in a morley blender loop
had a bunch of fun
they had an oportunity though that they missed
they shoulda put an EXP jack on the manual rate knob
im figuring it out and doing that mod
IF YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT BUYING ONE:
a) grow up
b) get a grip
c)pull yourself up by your bootstraps
d)buy it...$70 is a good deal here
