What if I pull two tubes out of a '65 twin reverb ri, and use an attenuator at a rather moderate level so I don't choke the amp to the point where it'll harldy sound better than a cheap practice amp?

What sort of loudness should I expect from that??? I'm guessing I'd still have to rely heavier on the attenuator than I like to...:s

i've been using my twin as my practice amp!!!

i only speak with exclamation points because i can't hear myself talk anymore!!!!

i'm sure it would be a bit quieter if you did that though, worth a shot!

Mesmerising, really really dig it. And I overdosed on the whole post rock genre, which has been overhyped and imploded and killed by the slew of boring eits/mogwai/gybe wannabees imo...

I just got a deluxe 65 and I cant put it past 2 when im jamming in my room. Its pretty loud.

Wanting power tube distortion out of a TRRI is wasting your time at that room size/volume.

For sane, "sounds good clean, gain from pedals", it'll work fine at bedroom and up volumes providing you aren't in a nunnery.

But power tube distortion, nope. Speakers opened up fully, nope.

But it'll sound good as described. If you can live with that, #yolo.

Ill give you some advice because I spent 6 months researching this because on the used market a deluxe vs twin is about the same price.
The 22 watt power of a deluxe seems scary when vs a 85 watt power house twin.
However, unless you are playing huge clubs and the amps will not be miced, there is no reason to buy a twin.
When you play in your house on a twin, going past 1 you will have no hearing.
I have a deluxe and I cant put it past 2-2.5, and its extremely loud when I do.
Plus, you will have hull it, which the twin will break your back. Its extremely heavy.
The deluxe isn't extremely light, but hulling it isn't a problem.
You will get good sound break up on the speaker on a deluxe at 4, on a twin I read you need to push it at 6-8? Which you wont be running it at that at all in a bedroom setting, without the cops being called, and you having no hearing. So you will need pedals for a break up on it.
Honestly, they are quite the same amp.

I'm in the process of starting a new band and I feel fine gigging with my deluxe.
Plus, Johnny Marr stated that he loves his twins but he really loves his deluxes.

It's not just the wattage - the two 12 inch speakers are gonna be hard to reign in.

Twin Reverbs are incredibly fucking loud. Why is that your home practice amp? Buy a Peavey Pathfinder or something for less than 100 dollars.

Or you can get a peavey valve king combo, they are cheap, take pedals well, and you can you can mod they hell out of them. Plus they're cheap, and all tube.
I paid 200.00 for a used 112 Valve king.

Maybe just pick up a Champ for practice? Probably the same cost of an attenuator and then you don't have to mess with your TR.

I run 6x12 (3 amps) in my living room rig, it's all about whether they need to scream to sound good.

A standard Twin doesn't. It'll sound good the minute it's even on generally.

Overkill for home use, sure.

But....not terribly hard to reign in.

Hell, just my Jazz Chorus could peel paint in this room.

That's without the halfstack or Hot Rod Deluxe.

I by no means need a Twin Reverb, but there's a '71 non-master volume Silverface TR that has been blackfaced and modded to 1x15 with a floating baffle and two tubes pulled (half power) near me that I'm really trying to talk myself out of trying to get....

I'm obviously not after power tube distortion, I was just hoping a twin could sound clean and decent enough without having to attenuate the shit out of it. I wanted a loud clean pedal platform for my band, an amp that I could also noodle with at home...

The weight/size thing is an issue too, but it's not a deal breaker for me.

My twin sounds good at 3.
Sounds a little bit better at ~4
Past 5, it only sounds louder.

How close are your nearest neighbors? I think that needs to be a part of the answer to this question in general. I can't imagine running any amp on 3 at home, let alone a Twin Reverb... but I live in an apartment.
