Best painting options for a bare enclosure?

So my buddy and I are working on a rehousing project, and I want to color the (aluminum) enclosure, but powder coating is out of the budget. Do you guys have any suggestions? We were thinking just plain ol' spray paint, and then doing some sort of clear coat finisher over it. Does that sound like it'd work?

Yes sir it works fantastic! :) When you can't afford a spray rig at the moment, it's a life saver.

Tips

Clean the enclosure first.

I usually clean it with soap and acetone. Just to get all the grime off. Paint doesn't like dirty stuff.

Sand it a bit to get the paint to stick better. I've found good results with this.

Buy a good clear coat that is at least double coverage. Meaning it's like spraying on three coats at once.

I suggest enamel paints because they offer very good coverage, but you could use almost anything. Have fun with it. Be creative!
