Midimorphosis App…It Good

My effects journey went down the rabbit hole when I started trying to make my bass sound like a big, angry bass synthesizer. I had some rad setups of pedals that I wish I still had, there were some great combos.

Then, I got the Roland Hex Pickup and used the synth pedal (I had a GR-55 and later a VB-99) both worked pretty well but I didn't love the sounds. Then I had an Axiom G-50 midi convertor, it worked well, I used it with my own synth modules. I might have been okay if I stayed here… But then I decided that I would process my bass with a modular synth….and lots of $$$$ later, I am in modular heaven I haven't gave a fuck about making my bass sound like a synth for awhile.

Yesterday I saw this iPad app called Midimorphosis, it is a pitch-to-midi convertor. It's 8 bucks and I figured, well, if it works as good as a Sonuss B2M then it is worth 8 bucks (because that is about all that POS B2M is worth). Luckily, I have all of the stuff that it takes to get this app to work. I have an audio interface for my iPad, a DI on my bass amp, a PA for the sound from iPad to play through. The app works pretty damn good. It doesn't glitch (unless I want it to), of course there is some latency on low notes. It worked great on my D and G strings. With some tweaking of Midimorphosis controls and making sure that I adjusted the synth sounds so they work better (less Attack on the ADSR), I ended up having a lot of fun with Animoog and my drum machine.

I am sure that it probably works better on guitar as long as you play clean and mute well. I would have recorded a video but I usually record them with my iPad. I will record something tomorrow. I have my buddies guitar here as well and will give that a shot too. The polyphonic mode in Midimorphosis works well too.

Jam Origin's "MIDI Guitar" seems to do okay for guitar and is freemium. Low E issues with built-in mic or cheap headphone jack interface because of the damned HPF they do, so I should buy a real interface before more pedals. Have no idea of how viable it is for bass.

I just downloaded Jam Synth but haven't tried it yet. I am pretty sure it won't work well on bass. Jam Synth is supposed to have quick tracking. If not, my buddy can use it on guitar. I will report back later.

I think it works great on guitar, but not with down tuned guitars besides drop d. I've chained 6-8 synths firing off at once a few times. The tracking take some getting used with the string sustain (a compressor would probably help). On bass, the low end either got lost or it was octave 0 on a keyboard and sounded like mud (although I think that is still being worked on)
