Tele pickup's phase

Tele pickups: are they supposed to be wired in-phase or out?
(Please don't faceplam me, this is my first tele project.)

Generally speaking, they should be in phase. I have worked on a few 70s Teles that were wired out of phase, though, so there isn't really a set rule. The middle position on a Tele with the pickups in phase is one of my favorite sounds.
