As much as I love my DMM, a) I'm worried about it breaking down and b) at the last show, i realized it's too noisy

My DMM is the 1979 version, broken and then revived. At the last show, the soundguy took my bass through the DI on my GK and didn't cut any treble on it, because it sounded great in the room as it was. However I forgot to tell him to cut some because of the DMM. When I turned it off for one of the calmer tracks, I had to immediatelly turn it off because of the whine - it was a big venue with great PA, not great for noisy rigs.

So i'm thinking I'll keep it at home for recording and stuff. Not worth selling because it's not original and I also love it too much. I need something not noisy and reliable since I might be playing much more live and I'm most probably going to tour next year as well...

I need a replacement. Not looking for something that will necessarily stick with me for life. Not using delay on bass as much as I would use it on guitar, but when I do, it's a prominent thing, sort of Chancellor/Caxide-ish, becoming a part of the riff most of the time I guess. I was actually thinking of getting a DD-20 or RV-3 (to be honest, I was thinking about Disaster Transport or Dispatch Master too, but didn't get any responses in BST yet...)

Not a big fan of too clean delays on guitar, but I do admit that I find them a bit more interesting on bass. Just haven't had the chance to try those two (or four) with bass. Anyone who could chime in?

ps: my usual delay times run between 400 and 500ms most of the time. So digital delays are mainly a choice because they're quiet, not because I need long times.
The presets and tap on DD-20 would be handy, but not necessary. I mean the greatest thing about that would be that there's one song I play on guitar and i could have one super-soupy preset ready for that, but still not necessary to have presets...

The disaster transport is cool as fuck but it doesn't get clean.
Um one that can do everything well apart from the dd-20 is oft overlooked Eventide Timefactor. Can be had pretty cheap used and are just all round mad pedals.

I personally found that the Flashback x4 is amazing and my favourite digital delay out there. The Alter Ego I really want and it has a DMM setting too....

I have not found any decent modern day EHX delay - I like the SMM w/H for looping but I'm not really crazy about the delays and the bassist in my bands has a Deluxe Memory Boy and too be honest it's kind of crappy. Too many "goofy" controls and not enough practical use.

I've got a DD-20 and love it. It's a breeze to tweak, has 4 presets and the tone knob is great to have for bass. I also had a EHX DMB that I really liked and may get another one someday. Expression control of feedback is a lot of fun.

Empress Superdelay is everything I need in a delay.

I'm not fluent in DMM. How's the RI stack up?

For what you're describing I'd look at the Boss RE-20 faux Space Echo. Would get you tap, the stuff you want otherwise, etc.

DD-20 would work as well but if I had to pick one delay, it'd be a Space Echo (including the digital one), and for gigging without hassle, I'd go the digital variant all day as much as I love my piece of furniture.

It also passes the "can replace easily at any music store" test for gigging purposes.

I have a big box dmm and a disaster transport. I love them both. The DT, while doing its own tricks really nicely can also cop the sounds I use the dmm for very closely. It's not 100% exact, nothing is, but I think for live use you'll be happy. It's a very cool pedal and I love the foot switchable modulation. I've never tried it on bass, so I'm speaking just about guitar, but I imagine it would translate well.

Have you tried the memory boy?

As mentioned, Disaster Transport is hawt and would probably fit the bill!
Also, idk about the DD 20 but the DD 7 analog mode is better than any analog delay I've played

i find the Memory Boy a bit bland. I used to have DD 20 on guitar years ago and remember liking it alot, seemed like a really nice swiss knife thingie. Responded to some ads, one guy forgot to take his down after selling it, awaiting a response from another one...

the RE-20 might be a cool idea! I remember experimenting with virtual simulations of the Roland while recording bass with the bass player from my ex band (I did recording and production for everything except the drums) and I really enjoyed tweaking the EQ and having the repeats thinner and popping out a bit more but not cluttering the lows... and stuff like that... Will keep an eye out cheers. the DT would be also good, it's one of my favourite delays I've owned so far, love the modulation to death

But to be honest - I'm not set on any particular sound or character, especially on bass where, as I've noticed, the low notes can sometimes make more character-oriented delays a bit too syrupy and lacking definition Also - unlike on guitar, delay is not as essential on bass for me.

So it's pretty much "what pops up used and catches my eye" sort of thing Don't see any good priced Timefactors sold locally, can't find any RE-20. Good thing is I'm not really in a hurry and can just check what's being sold and pull a trigger at the right offer

I like the Deluxe Memory Boy but it's a bit darker than the Deluxe Memory Man so I don't know how well it works on bass.
Cleaner and crisper delays tend to work better on bass in my experience, though it depends what you're going for of course.
As far as closest in sound to the Deluxe Memory Man I'd mention the Smallsound Bigsound No Memory, I don't know any delay that gets closer, the Death By Audio Echo Dream 2 does it too so you could also take a look whether someone can build you a nice PT2399 delay with modulation.

I don't know where you are but I feel your pain too.

Anyways, vintage DMM can be replaced with DMM XO, or AD9 if modulation is not what you are after.
