Cab/speaker advice needed

In short:

2x12: Eminence Delta, EVM12L, Fane AXA12 or Medusa 100,...?

Versus

4x12 loaded with G12H30's, or GWS ET65/Reaper/veteran, or...?

I'm used to rocking 4x12's. So when it comes to a 2x12 like that, will the lack of those two speakers even be a big deal, especially when the speakers are bigger/louder, more efficient?

You're almost there, but you're asking the wrong question.

This is your answer (used to be my answer too obviously).

Image

Now I have the Fanes in a Mesa Trad. 4x12 with a pair of G12H(55)'s.

Image

The EVM12L's are in the tweed Lopo cab with one of the pairs of Mesa OEM V30's from the Mesa cab.

The Fanes and G12H's are powered by my Tremoverb (4xEL34), and the EVM's and V30's by the 4x6550 power section of my
KMD XV100SD which is slaved to the Tremoverb's preamp via my stereo FX pedals in the T-Verbs loop.

Next on the list is a pair of alnico EV SRO 12"s and a pair of either; a) Fane Medusa 150 or 150C's, or b) Studio 12L's.

Then my stereo 6x12 stacks of doom Nirvana will be completed with 2 Fanes, 2 Celestions, and 2 EV's on each side.

Anyway, that Lopo cab above loaded with the EV's and Fanes was the best cab for metal I ever played. Jamming HOF riffs through that cab was fucking unreal, so deep, thick, and with juicy chewy midrange grind that just killed, and smooth treble that even with all that power still had a sweet timbre that was not harsh at all. I could play the verse riff for Turk through that cab for hours and never get tired of hearing it.

If you're used to a 4x12 and want that punch, nothing else will come close.

If you just want loud and clean and you don't need the oomph and presence of standing in front of it and letting rip, the right 2x12 or anything that makes you happy will work.

I see. Thanks. 4x12 it is then. Btw, Mad Titan: Sick rig you got there :o

I'll try pairing two of the stock celestions with two new speakers. The WGS ET65's come to mind, they're supposedly closer to G12H30s thanb any other GWS model.

Can't really afford to go all out and get 4 fresh speakers, let alone pricey ones like the Fanes or VEM's.

I have an open back 2x12 with a pair of EVM 12L's, and it's just as loud as my two other 4x12's. Those speakers are loud and balanced all around. I have an Ampeg v2 4x12 that has Eminence C.Rex's and Governors, and that might be a hair louder but definitely colors the amp's sound.... and I have a Scumback loaded Marshall 4x12 that isn't as loud but has more low end and punch. Anyways, moral of the story is get all of the above so you always have options. But if you just have enough for a 2x12, a pair of EV's will make it sound huge. Look for a pair of SRO's, they are even louder and thicker sounding than the 12L's.
