::: Proco FAT RAT :::

Thought I'd make a dedicated thread for this pedal while myself been wondering what's the outcome for the fat rat, anyone tried it?

Had few Rats and currently been using my Turbo after I stupidly sold my WF. For some reason I went ahead and ordered the fat rat instead of getting another WF or even the Arc effects Soothsayer as my initial interests, due to the bass switch, mosfet & germanium combo and of course, the bomb-proof case (moe-joe). Mine will arrive this weekend as an early Xmas gift. Yeah, from me to me. :!!!:

I have one, I like it. But even on bass, I prefer the standard setting. Sure, you get more low end with the bass-witch, but I prefer the gnarly, raw character of O.G. RAT mode.

I also tried swapping the chip to an NOS LM308, and, while I have pretty sensitive ears, tonally speaking, in particular when it comes to things fuzz, I noticed approximately .00138% difference between that and the standard OP07.

Either way, I give ProCo a solid :thumb: and, of course, RATS are fucking :joy: all over.

Is that 308 REALLY noticeable, especially in a band context? Btw where did you get the legit nos chip? I've heard the reason they stopped putting them on stock rats cos it's discontinued as we all know, and chips that are available are from surplus (don't know what this means) or faked and hard to be consistent in their production.

I know there won't be that much of a difference, but I'll might as well try it since it's pretty cheap anyway.

I picked up an LM308 on eButt for $5. Sure, there was a difference, but man, it was very subtle.

I didn't try both chips in a band context, just the OP07 after I put it back in. Sounds great! :joy:

So you're sayin the 'fat' mode trades a little grit for a little bit of low end? Pretty much liker the old Ruetz mod then :idk:

I never got alone with the Rat's bass suckage. *If* I ever end up with another Rat, I'll probably take closer look at the Rat Tail. I'd go all the way with the mods though. Too bad they're kinda pricey, considering the price of a proco rat :idk:

Oh yeah: My 2cnts on the LM308 chip. The slight difference is hardly worth the whole myth impo :idk:

Not really, at least not to my ears. You get more gain and less treble in FAT mode, but it doesn't quite smoooooove things over like a Ruetz.

Rat Tails are fuckin' awesome! :joy: I should have never sold my Beavis FKR. But, I am happy with FATTY RATTY (and my old RAT2). :animal:

I have a Big Box reissue Rat that came with the OP07 chip. Swapped it out for an LM308 chip. I noticed the LM308 chip had slightly better tone than the OP07 chip but had a slight increase in the noise floor.

Where have this pedal been all my life?(Wait, they just released it.. nevermind) Tried many fuzzes & dirt box, all come to this pretty chubby box.
The fat & mosfet switches are total sex & useful, finally the perfect Rat for me. I don't even feel the need to change anything at this moment.

How does the over sound of the fat rat compare to the vintage reissue model?

Vintage reissue/big rat is the only one that I haven't tried yet. But I gotta say, with the fat switch on it gives you more body & ENOUGH lows/low-mid (without exaggerating) which is very nice. Sounds fuller than any other Rats I've tried, it has that oomph when you strum. For the mosfet switch, I still couldn't tell clearly the sonic difference yet in my (low volume) bedroom. But the Rat rep guy, who is happen to be the rep in the TGP (spoke with him over the phone few days ago), he loves the mosfet mode so much that he wouldn't go back. I'll report back once I hit rehearsal space next week.

So far, I dig this thing a lot. Been a while since the last time I was happy with dirt pedals.

Cool :thumb:

One more thing… where is this thing made? If I am/were/is/maybe going to lay $200 on a RAT pedal this a thing I have to care about :hobbes:

FAT RAT is on my G.A.S. list as well. More than ever now that I know that it's made in the USA. Yay! Nice to hear that it seems to keep what it promised when it was announced earlier this year.
