I'm talking about the main riff in only shallow from my bloody valentine... is it some kind of weird pedal?? is it a weird chorus + slide?? I just cant figure it out.
I know there is some organ there... but how do yo do the lead guitar sound?
Thanks!!

I read in an interview that he put two amps face to face playing a jazzmaster through a tremolo pedal or something, and it fucking went crazy?

I dunno man, I dunno. Every other month I go through an insane kevin shields phase and just try to figure out how he did shit, but I'm pretty sure it's a nowhere road :(

?
Not perfect, but it's a pretty cool reverse reverb effect.

2:27, 2:45?

The guy's playing is shit in the vid, but it's definitely got that crazy MBV vibe to it, what with the reverse reverb, etc.

Well... the timing is horrible xDDD but i think the sound it's pretty similar. Thank you!

I have a Hardwire RV-7, and you can adjust the timing as well as the intensity on the reverse reverb setting. I'm not so sure about the Kaoss mini though. The RV-7 is pretty fucking nice though, I really dig the reverse and plate settings :)

I find that getting kevin's noises kevin's way is incredibly hard, but doing it your own way and fudging by is acceptable and easy.

I remember reading about it...i think that Kevin said that he recorded two amplifiers, facing each other, with different tremolo speed on each, and a mic in between them. Then he sped up the sample which made the sound high-pitched....or something like that,I'm not sure. :idk:

I was not talking about the reberv timing, but the guy. When he plays the lead part over the rythm, his timing is horrible...

Oh yeah, and he said he was just bending strings...and i think some overdubbing was done as well. :wow what a fantastic idea you have there:

For the "lead" (?) part I remember it involved reverse and then re-reverse tape somehow. :idk:

I've never seen them live , but from what i saw on youtube, it could have been reproduced with fuzz, whammy and tremolo pedals, and that wall of amplifiers that he's using...just a wild guess here.It doesn't sound exactly the same to me,but the vibe is kinda same.

from what I've been able to understand after listening incessantly to loveless and seeing them last year is that there are 3 basic tracks. There's the main power chord riff, then kevin bending 2 to 3 notes, then there's a sample of those bent notes that was recorded the way others have said with the amps facing each other and the tremolo going and that sample is sped up twice as fast so it sounds super high pitched. There isn't any reverse reverb that I can hear in Only Shallow...it's really just three guitars.

Live, bilinda does the power chords, kevin does the main bent notes on guitar and triggers the pre recorded high pitched sampled notes via some sort of midi controller.

Yeah, this sounds about right. I have a book on the recording of Loveless and they mention that tremolo/stacks facing each other thing. But as for the tremolo effect, I don't really hear it on the main bends, or the sample. I don't get how it comes into play, unless it's subtle and doesn't really do the choppy-tremolo effect.

But live, that set up is right. He just is playing the jazzmaster on it's bridge pup, and bending the hell out of the notes, with the marshalls at full volume. And then there's the high pitched sampled bends kind of going off somewhere "off rhythm" in the background.

i haven't seen any of their comeback shows, but when they were touring for loveless that part did NOT sound like the album, and they were using samples then too. i think it's like that johnny marr tremolo thing where you are never going to get it quite right outside the studio.

This may be worth reading:

From an old article in Guitar World from 1992:

For an answer, one might look to the hook on "Only Shallow," Loveless' opening track - that "elephanty, shivering guitar bit," as Kevin calls it.
"That's just two amps facing each other, with tremolo. And the tremolo on each amp is set to a different rate. There's a mike between the two amps. I did a couple of overdubs of that, then I reversed it and played it backwards into a sampler. I put them on top of each other so they kind of merged in."
