I'm in the fence about if I should get a amp. Here's the details:

Peavey 5150 head
Mesa 4x12 w/ celestion 30s
Total price 750$

My current setup includes:

Science Amps Mother
Science Amps 2x15 w/ kappas
Heavily modded Epi valve Jr head w/ cab

Do you guys think this is a good price? What about enough of a different thing going on with my other amps. I've got cleans for days with the mother and low gain small amp thing with the valv jr. It seems like a pretty good deal to me and the 5150 and 4x12 will offer different sounds for mixing and matching with my other gear. Help push me one way or another ILF.

He made you a 2x15?! Sexy. I thought the Mother was pretty crunchy? I do think it's a good deal, but does the 5150 do something you can't with the Science?

No? I'm questioning myself though. I'd do it for the cab if you can use the Mother through it.

Well the 5150 would cover higher gain sounds that the mother does not really do. I also have a wet dream of running guitar into a micro pog with the octave down going to the mother and the straight signal going to the 5150. But yea I feel like it would give me tons of sound options as in I do not feel like the amp or cab are stepping on sounds I can already do. If it matters I play guitar/bass in a ambient noise thing and bass for a metal band.

I hate the clean sounds of them but most the time ive heard them clean its high gain pickups and those are ugly clean.

Or, barring that, I probably could've stopped after the first sentence.

They're definitely a love it or hate it amp, that's for sure. I know people who swear by 'em and people who refuse to even consider them as a source of sound.

regardless of what you think of them, that's a hell of a good price for that setup. 5150's in good shape sell for $600 all the time. and you rarely see those mesa's for much less than 500. those cabs sound great. if you don't have a 4x12, that's a great way to go. if you don't like the head, you could always flip it and easily do pretty well. hell, you could flip the whole setup and do pretty well. you really can't lose.

for what it's worth, i had a 5150 for years and i think it's a good high gain head. loud as hell. gets a lot better with good tube choices too. i have no gas for one anymore, but i had my time in the sun with one and it served me really well.

i would buy it to flip it towards 2 vtm 120 halfstacks.
