Need speakers for new cab... what's good?

I need speakers for the incoming 6x12 and I'm still unsure of what i wanna run with. I've been eyeing the 55hz Reapers from WGS. I like the Weber 65s that I have in my Emperor but I'd like something that has a little smoother top end but I don't want a dark muddy speaker. anyone have any experience with them? And would you run a cab with all one kind of speaker (thats what I'm leaning towards doing.... OCD and all) or a mix of something like 4 55hz Reapers with two ET65s in the middle?

i want to try those reapers so goddamn bad. identical speakers in a 6x12 would be awesome so long as you like the tone

Blackarts Mark recommended the 55hz Reapers with the WGS Greenbacks. Never played through greenbacks so I'm not sure how they sound but the descriptions sound pretty nice.

For a doom 6*12" ; you're probably gonna find that the Greenbacks are lacking in terms of power handling and volume output. They're probably gonna be too midrangey for your tastes as well. Blending them with 55z Reapers could probably land some good results though.

I like mids though. My mids are dimed on my amp. Powering should be ok because 2 Green Berets would be 50 watts plus 4 Reapers at 30 watts a piece would still be plenty for my matamp at 170 watts. I'm not getting a stereo jack on it or anything so it'll only ever have one head running into it. If I were gonna run it in stereo I'd definitely be looking at different speakers.

EDIT:

Still kinda leaning towards pairing the Reapers with the ET65s though. I like the Weber 65s I currently have and I think they're supposed to be comparable tonewise. Still up for suggestions though.

On ET65 VS 1265's....

They are very similar tonally but also very different. I have the 1265's in my 6x12 and had the ET65's in my old 4x12. The 1265's are woolier and rounder sounding overall a very full sounding speaker. The ET65's have a bit more bite and clarity to them as well as some crispness. While the 1265's might sound better for recording the ET65's definitely have a slight advantage in a live setting. To be honest I actually preferred the ET65's and they're considerably cheaper than their weber counterparts.

You're the one I was waiting for since I knew you had experience with both. The way you describe it is exactly what I want out of the ET65. I figure the cut of two of those in the middle of four 55hz Reapers will have plenty of nice thick bottom end and enough clarity to still cut through.

Sounds to me like your on the right path. Plus the 4 30w's split with the 2 60w equals fairly even power dispersion so it should be a great combo.

I had ET65's and always found them super dark and slightly muddy :(
But I had old celestion 65's and they sounded great. Hmm...

Conky, take a look at the Eminence GB12. It's like a greenback that is much warmer with beefier low end and low mids. They sound really fucking good. I just ordered four 12's and I would have gotten those if I didn't already have Greenbacks. I ended up getting two Governors and two Cannabis Rex 12's. After having a handful of WGS, Webers, and Eminence, I keep coming back to the sound and quality I've experienced from Eminence. I could never get the best out of the other two companies, but I know people really like them, so it must have been a bad couple sets or something. Who knows. Good luck!

what about a combination??

2x celestion 65's for the warmth and taming of the highs
2x celestion v30's for the mid range and cut
2x celestion 75's for the bottom end

no idea if it would sound good...but sounds good in theory? :idk:

I don't get along with v30s. The mids are too harsh. That's what I like about the weber 65s. It tamed that nastiness. To be fair though, my only experience with them was in Mesa cabs (4x12 and 2x12) and my Soldano. That thing is brighter on its own so that could gave just been a bad pairing.

i think skip said it somewhere else...that V30's are very picky...very true...i had them in an orange cab and it sounded really great...i had them in a Zilla cab (UK cab builder) and it sounded not so good...but if you mix them with something that has more bottom end, then as a combination it might have a good balance in the mix...but then again, i havent played the weber 65's...

also...as far as amps got...the V30's were horrible with the Jet City amp i had...which like the soldano is a bright amp...which i guess is the reason soldano and jet city cabs dont come with V30's.
