im considering selling my 2 svt classics and running a pair of high wattage SS poweramps because im running out of clean headroom. i prefer crystal clear base tone wirh fuzz ontop for bass. my thougjts as of now is

sell 2 svt classics
buy 1 more svt 810e for a total of 5
run 68 blueline into its period correct 810
run 4 other 810s off a pair of nasty poweramps
buy preamp incase i want to leave vintage gear home.

question now is should i? if i do what preamp should i look at for a crystal clear tone, that accepts getting raped by fuzz?

note to self: cross post on talk bass and take a shot for every reply mentioning earplugs.

Verellen Meatsmoke Pre? Come's in tube and rack versions and is designed for basically exactly what you want to do. I've wanted to build pretty much exactly the rig your talking about for quite a while....

+1000 to this idea. I did this same exact thing. Had two SVT's, sold one.(just couldn't let go of both.) Bought a SVP PRO (I love the SVT tone and this sounds pretty close to my ears. Especially as a base tone.) and a powerful Carvin poweramp. I couldn't be happier. Stays as clean as I want at any volume and sounds exactly how I expect it to. You don't need to grab two amps, you could run stereo with two pres into both channels. Two channels running at say, 750w per side is stupid loud. I can run both my cabs at 1000+w @ 2 ohms but I chose to run 1 out of each side for better control. I couldn't be happier.

I actually talked to Ron about this same thing and that was the advice he gave me. (He runs something along the same lines.)

Ya, our bassist tried his old Carvin power amp with his VB-2 as a preamp because it was running out of headroom by itself. His sound is pretty nice, and since his poweramp has parallel channels, he can push a separate 810 with equal power.

I definitely had him looking at the different Ampeg tube preamps like the SVP. No use lugging around a 50 lb head just for the preamp, right?

Get a Crest Pro-Lite and any decent preamp. I use a PL 2.0 and my Dunwich pedal preamp. I wish I had a 3.0, but don't really need it.

Plenty of used tech 21 preamps out there that are great and cheap.
