Mark Kozelek (of Sun Kil Moon) vs the War on Drugs

Have any of you been following this shit show?

In a short summary: Mark Kozelek was playing a festival and the sound from the War on Drugs set, which was happening simultaneously, was bleeding over into Mark Kozelek's set. Mark proceeds to make some jokes about the band then says 'This next song is call 'the War on Drugs can suck my dick.'" A one sided internet battle with Mark continuously shitting on the War on Drugs continues, and eventually he writes a song call "War on Drugs: Suck My Cock". The song also addresses another recent incident where he got pissed at a crowd that wouldn't be quiet, threatens to leave, calls them all hillbillies, then tries to pass it off as a joke. Today Meredith Graves (of Perfect Pussy) posted a little essay about this whole fiasco.

Curious what y'all think.

Disregarding the social implications of "cock" and the sucking thereof, here's a one line summary:
holy shit this nerd is so butthurt (probably calls people fags in call of duty too) #basicbitch

Also I now wanna find some really aggressive porn and overdub half the guy's lines with "I THINK YOUR BAND IS BAD."

I've been enjoying this. Like I like a couple of Red House Painters records but they're pretty much made great by the fact that Kozelek is a colossal piece of work, to put it mildly. And war on drugs ARE boring beer commerical music, so hey, it's entertaining to watch.

I agree with pretty much everything here. I think the Graves essay is very mouth-breather-y in that particularly 'punk'/art school way because are you fucking kidding me with that pseudo rhetorical bullshit?
These men are devotees of a dangerous patriarchal herd mentality, which they confuse for part of some imaginary intellectual elite. These men can't just be smart on their own; they have to be smart in a superior way that only exists in relation to the ways in which other people are dumb, generic, inauthentic.
Beyond the gendered criticism (which I don't particularly disagree with), she's perfectly describing the audience that her publication exists to cultivate. The lack of self-awareness is startling.

After listening to the single and then reading the essay, I've come to the conclusion that I wasted my time. While I agree with the general idea of Meredith's writing, she is completely focused it seems that this is a gender issue. Mark Kozelek's shtick is being a piece of shit to others and critics thought the song was good? Fuck that lame shit. It really is some schoolyard crap. Don't come to me and say this song continues to uphold the patriarchy and heterosexual male fantasties. The song sucks, Mark choose his words poorly. If the title was "War on Drugs: Eat Shit" she wouldn't have written the essay I figure.

Who the fuck is this Meredith Graves again? I assume the parenthical that always follows her name is meant to imply that she - oh wait, am I being gender-biased assuming "Meredith" is a woman's name? - is in a band, but you'd never know because every time I've heard her mentioned it has been because of some lengthy screed posted on some website (perhaps I missed the photocopied-at-Kinko's-art-zine publication?).

my impression is the war on drugs dude has basically been pretty out of this whole thing and the sun kil moon dude is just a loser trying to gain attention as war on drugs grow bigger

really just sad music media nothingness

On the other hand, she's in the best band of the three.

I kind of agree with what Graves wrote, in terms of like the language of it and everything. But someone from a band as ethically compromised as Perfect Pussy writing on fucking Pitchfork sort of negates me wanting to care. I mean it's pretty obvious that it's curmudgeonly old dickhole Kozelek doing this because it makes him laugh, because he's a curmudgeonly old dickhole.
