Real quick: Everyone says use a conical soldering iron tip, which my fancyschmancy Hakko FX-888D did not come with. But Hakko makes a lot of conical tips for that station, which should I get? At this point, I'd only be building BYOC kits/maybe some repairs and mods on my basses. Thanks y'all!

buy some of different sizes. I use 0.032in for SMD, a little bigger for through hole pcb, and bigger than that for wiring pots and jacks.

i would say do this and see what works for you. i prefer chisel tips unless it has to be very small, im not sure there is a "correct" tip, although some can make certain jobs easier. Check out ali express for tips though you will get a better deal than amazon.

the 888 is a great choice for an iron though. hakko makes the best shit imho unless you have a lot of money to burn.

Not to de-rail the thread even further, but I feel this needs to be added:

What did the leper say to the prostitute?

It's okay, you can keep the tip.

Back on topic, I personally use a Weller SPI41. It's a 40 watt, with a chisel tip that is supposedly 2mm. I've found it decent for both general guitar soldering and doing circuits. It's useful to have access to two different sizes in one tip for me.
