Fender Rascal Bass

Anyone seen this? I like it. Weird short scale offset mashup kinda thing with a Bass VI body, 30" scale, matching headstock, unique dot inlay pattern, lipstick pickups, def a funky offering. I saw the original Custom Shop model awhile back but it was outrageously priced at $7999. This production model runs $799. Specs and pics below.

Originally created in the Fender Custom Shop by Master Builder Jason Smith, the Rascal Bass joins the Fender lineup as a sleek short-scale Classic Player model loaded with distinctive features and personality. With its 60s-era Bass VI body, three Seymour Duncan lipstick Stratocaster pickups, 30” scale and gorgeous gloss Ocean Turquoise finish with matching Coronado-style headstock, there’s no other Fender bass like the Rascal.

Other premium features include a flat-sawn maple neck with a comfortable C-shaped profile, 9.5” radius rosewood fingerboard with 21 medium jumbo frets and special inlay scheme (bass-side dot markers from 3rd to 9th frets, double dots at 12th fret, treble-side dot markers from 15th to 21st frets), vintage-style heel-end truss rod adjustment, white pearloid pickguard, five-way pickup switch with chrome barrel tip, push-pull master volume control that delivers seven pickup configurations, master tone control, distinctive bridge with four adjustable steel barrel saddles, vintage-style tuners and more. Deluxe gig bag included.

Do those lipstick pickups work well on bass? I guess they probably do, I guess I've just never heard a bass with one.

Weeeeiiirrd. I'd like to give it a go. Also those old Danelectro basses had lipsticks in em. Dunno how they sounded though.

They worked for Danelectro. I wouldn't mind trying one these guys.

Edit: Just got real jazzed on the idea of putting Jaguar switches on one of these.

I really dig the look of this bass, and the switching options too!

I haven't bought a bass in over 5 years, but this tempts me...

That's pretty damn cool. I'd be tempted if I played bass more, but seeing as I only pick up my Musicmaster Bass about once a month I don't think I need two.

Just found out that $799 is the minimum allowable advertised price. Looks like actual cost is $679 shipped which ain't too shabby.

It's super hot, but I'm really picky about headstock shapes and that one...

What a difference that angle makes

I dig it. Reminds me of a danelectro hornet. I like the dots too.

Man, I think I'm gonna take the leap and get one of these. I'm really digging the looks and on paper the specs sounds killer. Basically a Bass VI (which I sold recently) with a hard tail, more pickup configurations, and less strings. Should've called it the Bass IV.

As for switching, it's got the basic Strat 5-way plus the push/pull which gives additional neck+bridge and all 3 pickup configurations.

Not to derail too badly, but why did you get rid of the vi? I've been lusting from afar but haven't had a chance to play one.

I had a fancy Custom Shop VI and got a really great offer on it basically, just too good to pass up. I'll make that money stretch far and wide with new gear acquisitions.

And my best buddy has a super cool vintage VI in case I need one to play on occasion so there's that too. ;) It's a really cool instrument if you're on the fence about getting one. With the Squiers now it's pretty much a no brainer.
