Hey I want a compressor that sounds good. needs to work well on guitar and bass. looking for something kinda flexible? I really like the compresson on my lofi loop junky but I wish I had more control over it. I like compressors that fatten things up a little bit, but obviously not too much. I don't want anything transparent. from youtube demos I think the empress sounds the best.

Not too flexible but awesome sounding - MIJ Boss CS-2.

I have interest in this thread.
I haven't tried the Fairfield Accountant on bass yet, but so far I'm really enjoying playing with it.
I think I wanna compressor with a tone knob though. So, just yesterday I started looking. The Accountant is great, it's just not that flexible.
The Empress is supposed to be nice, not sure it's for me though.
What's your budget, ChetMagongalo?

The Warden and Philosopher King have lotsa controls. I haven't used them on bass but the ovnilab dude says they work well enough (and he really likes the warden).
just sayin'

Walrus Deep 6.
Has a clean blend.
I picked one up a couple weeks ago and I don't expect I will ever turn it off.

Diamond Bass Comp man. It's even better with the EQ circuit switched out.

I tend to like optical compressors better for adding non-coloring sustain and a little bit of brightness. I like chip/transistor compressors for more squish and a vintage type of flavor.

This is actually one of the first ones that came to my mind

My budget is less than $200. spending any more on a compressor would make me feel weird

My friend just got one of these and he seems satisfied. I'll have to play it!

Pigtronix philosophers tone is pretty great for both instruments. It does some nice weird pumping and it has a dirt circuit, also can set for stupid sustain. Worth checking out, not sure it's price.

Yeah, I was looking into The Warden, the Walrus and also the Wampler.
You should be able to score one of those used for under $200.
I was also looking at FEA, Origin Effects and other such higher priced foolery, but, yeah, I'd feel weird spending that much on a compressor too.

I like Boss and Dyna style for older/semi lofi super squish sounds. But I think I like compressors with as little knobs as possible. I could live with just a volume knob and maxed out compression/sustain. Which the Fairfield was perfect for! But I wanted more ugly squish from it, I could never get it too sound that ugly.
Philo's Tone is super versatile too and sounds similar to what you're looking for!
pssst... I have a Philospher's Tone in the BST if you're interested

Best sounding compressor money can buy in pedal form is the Effectrode PC-2A.
2 knobs, 1 switch toggles between 2 modes: soft-knee compressor and hard-knee limiting.
On both guitar & bass there are nothing but good settings across the knobs.
But it's pricy...

Are you looking for a pedal specifically or are you open to the world of racks? Such a detail can open or close a lot of doors. Also, since you want to color the tone do you imagine it being early in your chain or later? or middle?
