Magnetic Spray Paint from Krylon. Stumbled on it looking for the right color for my project guitar. The magnetic paint should effect the magnetic field of the pick ups, but how?

POSSIBILITY #1: I want to believe it would make them humm and squeal like crazy, and feedback like hell when too close to a speaker. (Desired outcome? Not sure how crazy i really want this thing to be)

POSSIBILITY #2: my very rudimentary knowledge of magnetism tells me the waves might work to cancel each other and just deaden the sound. (Waste pf $$$ and I would have to strip it again)

POSSIBILITY #3: the field of the paint is too weak to really effect anything. (Waste of $$)

I am willing to try it, but i just wonder if anyone has any theories they could pose about how this would work? Somone here must have some reasonable predictions?

EDIT: Playing my bass with pickups less than 1/2 inch from refrigerator produced only a slight hiss when moved in or out from the magnet, with no other noticeable effect. Not even a steady hiss. Should I expect anything more from magnetic paint?

PS- I miss the little slimy green smilie that was like :blah:

Despite the name, it appears to be paint for magnets to attach to. So it is probably just tiny steel filings in there? I guess I could check the MSDS sheet, it could be ceramic magnet filings too.

In which case it'd work to shield your guitar from hum/hiss if grounded, if it is all conductive. With the addition of a copper foil, it might really work well (shielding paint + copper foil seems to work well because the different materials block different radio wavelengths)

I'd be worried this magnetic paint just comes out too rubbery/goopy for a primer coat though. You want the thinnest possible layer of finish that still protects it and looks good. Also hard paint > rubbery Krylon, for sustain.

On the plus side, you could put fridge magnets on your guitar. Dunno if that is enough of a reason though...

Dude... YES THAT'S A GOOD ENOUGH REASON.

Make a killer sticker guitar... but with magnets...

the more i consider it, the less effect i think it would have. probably next to none. i'll pass.


@ MAthias, what kind of paint do you recommend? (I am not interested in $16 per can reranch)

For primer and clearcoat, the Rustoleum lacquer is good in my experience http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=109

Unlikely to get drip issues with it, if you go thin layers, whereas the Reranch clearcoat was all drips for me.

dunno which companies make lacquer colors in spray. I actually considered doing the sanding sealer/primer myself and taking the body to an automotive body shop for a quick pass by a guy with a proper paintgun. Dunno what that would cost.

valspar lacquer hi-gloss clear coat
