What fuzz is Pat Smear using in this Germs era pic?

I always loved his tone on the GI album. He never had a steady rig during the Germs, but the Lexicon Devil book makes reference to him being particular about his guitar sound in the studio and a troublesome "distortion unit" he owned - figured this might be it. Any ideas? Pic is from 1977. A maestro or something?

and they can be troublesome. the whole body of the pedal is the footswitch.

Germs rule. Just remember a lot of his tone was in his fingers.

I'm pretty sure it uses a normal switch, just in an abnormal way. The switch is inside the body of the pedal and mounted up side down. So, when you step on the pedal the switch presses against the bottom of it. I think it's cool, but, yeah, not a simple application.

the problem with that is it isn't very easy to tape severed fingers to your fingers.

Yeah, that's why Tony Levin uses these:

Actually, I think you'd be surprised how easy it is.
