I'm looking to buy a decent drum machine. I would really like something along the lines of an Akai MPC60, but I don't have that kind of money. Can you suggest any bargain drum machines that sound really good?

Do you have a DAW? You could go that route if yer into it.

Most importantly though what kind of Drum Machine sound do you want? Something classic like an 808/909, etc., more obviously synthesized drums, kit sampled, or break sampled?

Another question, what is your budget? There are several main price points.

If the MPC layout is what you want, maybe look for a used Akai XR20. You can't change the sounds in it but there has a decent variety, the sequencer is easy to use, etc. All drum machines sound good through effects too. The XR20 has a lot of "hip Hop" drum sounds but that is more marketing than truth, but it doesn't sound like a normal drummer's kit. It does sound pretty good overall though.

For the cheap end: volca beats
I like it and Play a lot with it.

used 1st generation machinedrum. Elektron makes the best boxes.

Elektron does make some dope boxes.

You can make whole tracks with a MachineDrum.

DAW = Digital Audio Workstation. Basically, a computer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_audio_workstation - you can get tons of drum machine emulators and sequencers that you could run on a laptop, which would probably be the cheapest way to go. I'm guessing you're looking for a standalone piece of equipment, though.

There's only been one video released so far, as far as I'm aware, and I don't think it has been very well received. I don't really know how it compares to the Volca Beats and other direct competitors but I thought the OP may be interested if they're a fan of Akai with a modest budget.

Ah, gotcha. Ya I probably want to get a stand along unit because my computer is about to bite the dust. Ideally I'd like to stay between $200-$300.

Used Ipad + used interface? Depending on the specific Ipad and interface could be well above or below your budget, but I know iOs has a lot of cool drum apps that I use on my iphone 4s. I've been gassing for an ipad for a while, but just haven't shelled out the cash for one. A decent iPad could also cover (EDIT: SOME OF) the territory of your computer about to bite the dust, they're fancy little critters.

Don't know enough to get exited yet, but the Rythm Wolf isn't too pricey. And most importantly: It's got wooden side panels!

Seriously though, I'm assuming you don't already own a laptop? If so, some sort of controller or midi thing should be a lot cheaper than an akai mpc16, and I bet you could easily get a hold of those kind a sounds for free if you want to. Not that you NEED a controller/keyboard, but it might makes things simpler/easier, or more fun:)

A machinedrum is all kinds of awesome. Don't know if it falls in your budget though:s
