Longest you've been away from your board...

Post by Helter »

Well what's the longest you have went without playing? without your board? without instruments? For whatever reason. I just thought this might be an interesting topic.

Me personally, I'm off to college in a few weeks and the only thing bumming me out is the inability to have my whole board and amp  . I'll only be confined to a PT nano and Logic :idk: which isn't that bad but I love the options of my whole board and obviously the volume/tone of a physical amp

I haven't had a full board in....6 years. kills me.

Havent' played through a cranked amp in about a year.

The thing is, I cant justify getting my board just so or setting up amp configuration while lacking drive to produce stuff. It's been making me want a Line 6 AM-4. I really hate neglecting my peggles....but that's just how it is. I know one day I'll get back to illin'.

If I have to be somewhere for more than a week, I usually bring or buy a guitar.

I had to go six months once due to money (can't live under a pre-CBS Mustang or three sadly) in the late 90s. Mid 2000s when I first got sick I didn't plug in a guitar for six or nine months, when I finally realized that if getting sick had taken that away from me I was already dead.

When I was in the hospital in ICU, I got the doc (who was also a guitar player) to let someone bring in my screaming yellow Mustang (because, well, stealing it and reselling it would be...hard). No amp, limited time with it. Just having it in view was the difference between wanting to die and wanting to live.

NEVER AGAIN.

I have backup guitars, backup effects, grab and go stuff that plugs into the laptop, etc. now.

I've taken trips that last half a year and I've felt no real need to make music while away. If I tried going half a year without making music in a city I would crumble after a day or two.

I think the longest I went in recent memory was two weeks. After week one I start having dreams every night where I'm playing instruments.

I spent about 6 months on just my acoustic. I still had my electric and board but I only had this crappy old tiny solid state amp and it just bummed me out because dirt pedals all sounded like a DS-1 through it. Not always a bad thing but yknow. My real amp was busted so I stuck mostly with acoustic. A good way to write a lot of songs really fast if youre wanting to

I spent my entire Freshman year in college away from doing most electric things. Granted, back then I only had a Holy Grail and a Death Metal. But I was never able to use an amp and just mostly played acoustic stuff

I'd been away from all my stuff except a banjo for the last five weeks or so while I was moving. Played a show in my hometown early in July, left my gear with my folks so I didn't have to move it as far and just picked it up Monday when I had another show.
I hate being away from it all. Even if you don't play every day, it's great to be able to look across the room and see it's there.

The month I was in the Netherlands was the longest I've ever been away from anything remotely musical altogether.

As for my board, since I got my first pedal, I've not touched an electric instrument without them boxes

For you--and anyone else who's gone this long without playing anything musical--what was it like returning to it after the break? Was your playing/attitude/anything different?

I've gone a month or so quite a few times without touching my guitars.
But I never stop working on the music.
Sometimes it's just only in my head, like a daydream.
