I snagged a Magicstomp at what I thought was a really good price off ebay. When it arrived the USB jack was all messed up and wouldn't work. I emailed the seller and his reply is that it has the updated software so it can do deep editing so I don't even need the USB. Of course I'm pissed and considering opening a case to get my money back. Dude should have had that little bit of info in the listing because I doubt I would have bought it. My question to you folks is DO I really need the software or do you find editing on the pedal is just as easy? I won't have much of a chance to mess with it until tomorrow due to work but I'm just wondering what other Magicstomp users think. I'm also considering ordering a replacement jack and seeing if that works, but I wouldn't want to do that if I'm going to send it back.
tl;dr how is the deep editing on the Magicstomp and would you be happy with yours even if you couldn't hook it up to a computer?

I would send it back on principle alone.
That guy's a dick if he sent you a broken pedal without saying that something was wrong.
Did he say it was as-is or for parts, or was he advertising it as fully-functioning?

I've had one for about 6 years and have never used the USB software stuff. I tried to once, but it wouldn't work with my mac anyway, so I never got around to worrying about it again. I'm happy with just the deep editing on the unit. I think the only need for the USB would be to download or share patches.
That said, unless you got a super deal, I'd return it for a full refund. The guy should have noted the defect in the listing.

Yeah, he had it listed as used but his description said “Works fine. Includes power supply. updated firmware allows deep editing without connecting to PC.”
No mention of the busted usb jack. The more I think about it the more pissed I'm getting. I might have paid half what I did had I known about it, if that.

Not that much of a deal. I might see if he wants to do a partial refund. If not then I'll probably just open a case.

I find it a lot easier to edit/create patches using a computer but it requires a system that is running XP so I rarely get the opportunity. A lot of people seem to be happy to make most of their adjustments using the deep edit function.

Deep editing without a computer is doable, but a pain and you basically need to keep the manual in front of you to do it. The editor is worlds better. (XP is the most recent Win OS officially supported, but it's doable in Win7 and probably 8 with certain install tweaks based on post in the Yahoo Group. No work-around for Mac that I know other than to keep an obsolete machine around.)
Unless it was insanely cheap, I'd return it. You can usually turn up a fully functional Bass or Acoustic version for about $100 with a little bit of patience. Flash the latest firmware and those and the electric guitar version are all the same thing.
