midi questions

I've been looking into midi keyboard controllers for a couple months now, as I keep collecting organ/keyboard/etc samples without an easy way to trigger them within Reaper.
I picked up a mint akai S612 sampler today, and I need a way of triggering it, so I figured that the midi keyboard could serve both purposes. Would the midi keyboard need to
have a midi in jack for the akai, or would midi out be ok? The akai has in, out and thru. Most midi keyboards I've looked at only seem to have a midi out jack. Any help much appreciated.

Out from the controller and in to the sampler. Set both devices to the same channel and you're set.

Controllers only have midi outs because all they do is send messages to something else, hardware or software. You'll find midi ins on things like keyboards, samplers, and synths because those will allow you to control their internal sounds and processors with other devices.

Be careful to not buy a USB-only one if you need the actual DIN out.
Many of the cheapies are USB only.

I just picked one up yesterday actually, an edirol pcr-m80. USB and MIDI in+out. Now I just need the midi cable and I can finally try this
sampler out.

Ebay or Monoprice.com - MIDI cable is pretty much a MIDI cable.
You're not transmitting anything but data, it either works or it don't.
