I found this pitch dutuner patch in Audulus app, I'm tuned to E, dropped to B:

It sounds pretty digitally, but that could be lots of things. Are you convinced?

Convincing of what? That the pitch is being detuned in tandem with the original signal? If so, yes, I'm convinced that that is happening.

I'm deciding whether or not this is something I can really use, it tracks single notes ok, but has some trouble with polyphony.

Yeah pitch modulation--especially on mono recordings--can sound weird since it's smearing your tuning. The less complex the intervals you're playing, the clearer it sounds. So I wouldn't think of it as "trouble" with the polyphony, just that several notes out of tune and in tune played simultaneously tends to have that sound. It's best for washy, out of focus stuff. I don't know about your plugin but if it has a stereo option you can also get some very wide stereo imaging from a mono recording with the right settings. Depends on what you're going for and why.

That said it reminds me of Hum's sound; heavy distortion and chorus/flanging/whatever making a timbral fog.
