Bored With Muffs

I'm looking for a new fuzz, but I'm kinda bored with the wooly muffy sound. Looking for something...tighter, less scooped, and more jagged as far as clipping goes. But still relatively warm and heavy. I tune to B though, so...yah know. I've been using an FZ-2, which I love and it's close to what I'm looking for, but it has a very specific character on the high end that has me wanting to branch out a little. Was thinking about looking into a Fuzz Factory? Suggestions would be rad.

Ever thought about a Dr. Scientist Frazz Dazzler? :)

It's agressive, but I would call it tight (especially on the gated setting). Also nicely voiced. and if anything, it's HEAVY

And unlike a Fuzz Factory, it's dead easy to use AND best of all - unlike Fuzz Factory, the sound has some weight, I find FFs a bit on the thinner and more cutting side (unless you wanted to try the Fat version) :idk:

I felt the same way with all my Muffs. I love them but I wanted to try something different with those qualities you posted. I ended up falling in love with a Fuzzrite clone my buddy built. I think he built it with bass specs (but I play guitar ((in drop B and C# standard)) through it) and it has been giving me huge fucking heart eyes when I play it. I use a SS/BS Mini after it just to add a hair of high mids and clarity. Running my amps on the verge of break up, with a relatively mildly hot P90 pickups. Fucking excellent, huge, warm, thick, and still clear and detailed. I think the FZ-2 might be based off a fuzzrite also, but I can't recall. When I used an FZ-2 I loved it but it was way more bright and a bit too scooped in the setting I had it. I liked it more for leads and shit. Anyways, the Fuzzrite clone I use was made by DannDubbleEwe here on ILF. You might be able to hit him up for more details as too what it's based off or if he can build you one. He sells a lot of his shit here on b/s/t, he might even have a few posted. Idk. good luck.

Warmjet V. Ghost Effects. As the Beastie Boys might say, it's what you, what you, what you want. Ticks all the boxes you mention: tighter, less scooped, more jagged, still plenty wild and woolly. Huge range of sounds with the bias adjustments and can even get Muffy if you want it to. Replaced a Ram's Head Muff and a Mk1 Tonebender on my board.
Fuzzrite is also a good suggestion.

That was the stiffest sounding Beastie Boys reference I've ever heard.

(I do approve of the Warmjet V endorsement though.)

Don't hesitate to check out smallsound/bigsounds Team Awesome Fuzz Machine and BUZZZ. Both sound amazing on down tuned guitar.

i won't use a fuzz factory or zve pedal again, because the assholeness/doucebaggery of Zach has just become too much to think about.

Basic Audio, have a few circuits that might tickle your fancy, Blackarts are kicking some goals too :-)

I'm really diging the spooky tooth, covers a lot of ground and not muffy at all.

Something squishy sounding. Super fuzz would be good.

No offense, Horesey, but that's gold plated gold.

Also, superfuzz... less scooped?
DAYUM.

Thanks guys. Gonna check all these out. Yeah, the SS/BS Buzzz is one I was eyeing. Doesn't seem to be a lot of clips out there though...

Another guy I've been thinking on is the DBA Fuzz War. Sounds pretty close to what I'm looking for based on clips (despite being kinda Muffy ). Anyone have experience with that one in lower tunings?

Edit: Ooh I dig the Warmjet. The clips I've watched make the attack seem a little sluggish though? Almost sounds octave down... Could just be the guitar though :idk: Also, the Basic Audio stuff has given me something to think about :thumb:
